I went to see "The Color Purple" musical this evening, and it was good. What was the last live artistic event you attended, and how was it?
Puddles Pity Party. He is a great entertainer as well as having an amazing singing voice.
Steve Hackett at Symphony Hall. Excellent.
The last show I was in was in a reader's theatre version of Spring Awakening. That music was harder to sing than I expected, and it has given me a newfound respect for the performers who recorded the soundtrack.
The last show I saw was a belly dance/burlesque show where my wife performed with an outfit made entirely of newspapers with Trump headlines. She performed to Lily Allen's Fuck You, which I have since learned was originally written for George W. Bush, so that makes it just as relevant (aside from the part about winning daddy's war).
The Dillinger Escape Plan on their final tour. Still the best live band I've seen.
I've never actually listened to those guys yet, big FNM fan though.
@smoyle Much closer to Fantomas than FNM. Did an EP with Mr Patton called 'Irony is a Dead Scene'.
Saturday night I saw a performance of Tristan und Isolde. Five hours total (four hours of music) is certainly the longest performance of anything I've ever attended, but it was well worth every minute. The Cleveland Orchestra was their usual fabulousness, and Nina Stemme as Isolde lived up to her reputation as the greatest Wagnerian soprano of our time!
I think it was Megadeth/Scorpions. Megadeth were all right, but I'm not as in to them since Dave went all right wing/Evangelical Christian.
Scorps are cool, but a bit to polishedradio-friendly for me. Fortunately, they had Mickey Dee, from Motorhead on drums and he was f&#king killing it. They played 2 or 3 Motorhead songs with him and gave him about a 10 minute drum solo. My friend and I were shouting our asses off and all the annoyed Scorps fans were looking at us like we had mental issues. The Scorps went in to an acoustic set after that and we bailed.
I've not heard any megadeath stuff since Rust In Peace.
Oh, wow. They did quite a bit of solid work after RiP. I would at least check out Countdown to Extinction. That's an all-time favorite album for me. Youthanasia has some great material (a few clunckers), as does Cryptic Writings. After that, it's pretty dodgy for me.
Last theater: portrayed Thurston in "Gilligan's Island, the Musical", watched "Icons", Gay History of the world, 1 person show with Jade Esteban Estrada.
Concert: Postmodern Jukebox... and small venue "Jonnie P and the Wiseguys".
Postmodern Jukebox is on my bucket list
My daughter just graduated college with a Theater Arts degree. I have been to MANY plays in the last 3 years. For the most part, I have enjoyed them. Some were more difficult to get into than others and some I just absolutely loved. She is currently involved with a local theater, so that is another play I will be seeing.
It was actually a musical, and quite good. Hope you enjoy your daughter's next performance!
@AzVixen52 Thank you for the kind thoughts. She actually had stage management as her specialization. She loves the challenge of coordinating everything and making the show come off with out a hitch. I have learned to love theater.
I saw the band Subsonics the other night at the Earl, supporting their 28-min new record FLESH COLORED PAINT. Killer show, as always. First time I've gone out to an event in a while, but they put me on the guest list kindly. I'd like to go to more smallish shows, but I don't want to go alone. Did also recently attend and report on 7 days of the 11-day Atlanta Film Festival, which is exhausting and invigorating all at the same time.
I LOVE live theater! I recently saw The Book of Mormon and it was amazing!
I'm hoping to see that next!
My teenaged daughter is heavily into musical theater. Recently, her company performed Addams Family, which was very good. The theater company she belongs to is pretty big and occasionally split the kids up and do two different shows. They did that this time and the younger ones did Lion King. These are all Broadway versions, and always good. So I spent Saturday evening watching that, striking the set, and then last night was the cast party. It's always a roller skating event and I really enjoy that too. =]
I went and saw the the "The Stranglers" live in concert back in February in Perth West Oz. My daughter who I love dearly, knows that I love music and so any muso/group from my era (70s,and onward) that happens to be in town, she buys me tickets for. For the record, the Stranglers were great too.
I went to see Avenue Q at the local community college Saturday and it was really funny.
Love that show. It's a shame Gary Coleman is dead now. Makes me slightly guilty for liking the show, but it's still pretty funny.
Imperial Russian Ballets Nutcracker friday night.
The fly plot was intense.
Since I'm in Theatre, I attend a LOT of artistic events, sometimes on stage, sometimes behind the scenes, and sometimes in the audience. I enjoy them all.
A stage version of Quincy Jones Whoopi Goldberg Danny Glover and unknown Oprah ?
Yes
