There is one thing even the members of the two main tribes which are locked in a fierce culture war can agree on. It's not a topic or opinion they have in common, but an attitude: "Don't mess with our identity!"
The hostilities begin as soon as they start to define their "identities".
Most of us today are not citizens any more, we are members of identity groups.

Sadly, too too true. But, there are still many of us who want our society and government to work, in terms of treating us all with dignity and respect, and in terms of enabling us all to pursue, life, liberty and the pursuit of meaningful and productive lives I do not give a damn what one chooses to call himself or herself. I do care about the ability of people, regardless of ideology, to work together to get things done that get things done which enable us all to have more productive ad satisfying lives.

What about those of us who don't identify with either extreme? You are right about the above point, that's how both sides act, don't you dare mess with their identity movements.
