My rant for today.

I'm speaking in regards to Americans as that is whom I'm most familiar with.

Children are brought up not to question authority. Accept whatever adults tell you and never ever question them. Accept whatever authority figures tell you and never ever question them. Sadly this is carried on throughout most people's lives. This is how the political parties have wrestled the power away from the people. It's how religions have wrestled away common sense from people. Free will, critical thinking, reasoning, logic? All frowned upon by those in authority or wishing to assert it over others. It's a simple plan that has been used throughout history in a variety of ways and it's what is being done in our country and across the world today.

Take church, for example. If you've ever attended you might have noticed there is little to no questioning going on. Perhaps, stupid questions like “How can I be a better Christian?” and nonsense like that. Nothing in regards to questions like “Who wrote the bible? When? How was it put together? What proof of Jesus is there? Who is telling the story of Jesus and when?” Etc. No critical questioning whatsoever. People are told something and simply accept it as the truth.

The exact same thing is happening with politics and media. We are told things yet ask no critical questions. We don't demand proof. We don't confront and engage with those in authority. By “We” I mean Americans in general. Certainly there are exceptions and many on this website are examples of that, yet many still remain very much in that mold. I'm not criticizing anyone anymore than I criticize myself as I was brought up to not question authority as well. I, along with many others simply grew tired of that mantra and decided the truth was the most important thing, fuck authority.

Most people aren't evil. Most people aren't even dumb. What most people are conditioned not to question and not to think for themselves. Yes, people are ignorant but we're all ignorant to one extent or another. It's the idea that we are taught from an early age not to question and thus not to learn and stay ignorant. People are implanted with thoughts and told they are smart for thinking this way. Yet, they've actually performed no independent thinking at all. They are tricked into thinking they have.

Feel free to expound.

As the only skeptic among the 5 of us siblings growing up, I was the only one excused from having to complete my catechism, so I was never confirmed, etc.

Part of my rebellion was calling my parents on their insistence to "Do as I say, not as I do" when trying to get us to do something, but weren't modeling that good behavior to us. I think that shaped my habit of questioning authority.

I usually follow rules, but I like to know why the rule was made and I like to see the rule maker following it too.

I run the risk of boring everyone, by repeating my personal definition of religion again.

Religion is a synonym for the common fallacy called. "The proof from authority."

Whether that authority comes from and old book, a supernatural being, a gurus supposed wisdom, or tradition, etc. it does not matter.

I agree. I would say, however, that people on the political right tend to be way more obedient and unquestioning of authority than people on the left. Which explains why so many Trumpers and members of the GOP are so quick to believe in conspiracy theories that have no basis in fact. I also agree that most people aren't evil, but so many are dumb. As Sticks 48 has often said, half the population have IQs below 100. It is easy, on a site like this, where the vast majority of its members have IQs well above 100, probably because non-believers tend to be smarter and more intellectual than most believers, to forget we are mostly way smarter than most Americans. It lulls us into feeling more normal or average than we are and thus, easily frustrated with why most of the herd outside of this site is not as intelligent or critical in their thinking as most of us. If only most Americans were like us, we wouldn't have a government chosen by sheeple..

@FvckY0u You make some good points. Most of us on Agnostic do appear to be deeper thinkers than the average person. I do agree, however, that it might be true that it takes a deep thinker to do the mental gymnastics of avoiding reality, making sense of nonsense, etc. Those people might be hard to detect or distinguish from other believers who aren't deep thinkers and are easily able to accept religion. Same with members of the ignorant herd simply choosing to not think critically rather than lacking the intellect to do so, in the first place.

Thanks for the props on my IQ. I have been tested twice as an adult, and my IQ was in the 130s both times, but I am far from the smartest person I know. My late wife was smarter than me, and a friend of mine who is a retired doctor claims to have an IQ of 163. I'll take his word for that, but at the same time, he has some emotional intelligence issues, has to be right all the time, and can be exasperating to deal with at times.

Not Judaics. They are always arguing the Torah & its interpretation. If folks did not question, then there would be fewer Xrtians denominations. I think current political situation whereby a coup was attempted by those that are challenged in there ability to think clearly as a cult or mass hysteria, truly believing that the lizard people have taken over the government & we must "fight like hell" save it. They are wrong of course but it has happened before as rwill attest and as with 75 million currently manipulated fools of Putin the Mastermind.

I bet most of the people on this site were the kids that the parents eventually had to say "Because I said so!

I eventually had to say that to my son out of pure exasperation but not often.

Grandchildren are the grandparents’ revenge.

Agree with you 100%. The problem starts in early childhood that is when the Christianists get a hold of little children and plant all that shit in their heads. You don’t even need to be a member of a church for this to happen. This is the problem that we must try and overcome, how I do not know.

Darren, if you’re describing your own childhood, please say so.
