The unholy trinity. Three darknesses at the heart of Christianity.
Apart from the obvious often commented on fact that the authors of the gospels, put many racist, sexist and violent remarks and actions into their central figure, ( Not a great example. ) there are perhaps at least three much deeper core darknesses at the core of the Christian myth..
The first being its demand for absolute rigid obedience to fixed moral law, even to the degree of promoting the idea of thought crime. Think it, and you sin. Which, by being quite impossible to achieve in real life, creates in Christianity the inevitably need for total forgiveness. "Believe in me and I will wipe away all sins." Making Christianity a religious culture, which by its nature, devalues guilt and taking responsibility. ( And yes, I am aware that too much guilt, can also be toxic. ) While at the same time creating a divisive, "insiders can do no wrong, outsiders are lost totally," mentality, within congregations, and a culture, where morality is seen as an ideal thing, not part of the general world, and therefore something to be devalued to the point of being ignorable. The idea, "I don't even have to feel guilty, because I am one of the chosen." is truly toxic, even if it was not part of the original intent.
The second darkness being, that it contains the idea of end times mentality and anti-materialism. That we should devalue this world in favour of another more perfect one. Which idea is at the base of much of the anti-environmentalism in our culture, and shallow values in our arts. Even though it makes no logical sense, as many Christians themselves have pointed out, to think that you can. “Show respect for god by despising his creation.” Except that we are shown an example of a god who destroys his own creation once out of spite, will soon do so again, and holds out the promise of a better world hereafter, so engendering a view of a failed creation, and anti-materialism. Which is surely the opposite of the respect and appreciation for the world and nature, which any true philosophy should try to teach.
And thirdly, by forcing the moral and intellectual leadership to accept and use such tools, with the logical inconsistencies and often plain falsehoods that are built in, it creates a situation where the leadership of the Christian world, is forced to accept high levels of cognitive dissonance, and low standards of logic , ( Often accompanied by long convoluted theological explanations. ) and train themselves ruthlessly to those methods. Which almost certainly lowers the standards of the moral and intellectual leadership, across every sphere, from news reporting, to politics and social science, because no ideology is an island. And also leads them to think in terms of the general population being lower class creatures, who need to be duped with second rate thinking, as a needful form of government, rather than being given good examples of clear thought to aid self improvement. All of which is probably very toxic and destructive to the standards of thinking and honesty, embraced by both the leadership and the whole of society.
There may be more but those three will do for now, if you can think of others please tell me about them.
