Back to school after 50?

I have an opportunity to get a masters or go straight for a doctorate if I want to take it. Has anyone done this? Happy day of Saturn!

Cheers!

I got my MA in Theatre and Dance at 55. If your goal is to teach at the college level, then by all means get the PhD or MFA.

I started my first college class at 42. Took dual Master's degrees so I finished at 50. Glad it's over but glad I did it.

If you take a Master's it would be quicker than a PhD. The doctorate would involve more money and effort. Depends on your goal and the benefits of each program. With a PhD you have the option of teaching with a decent salary, but a Master's not so much.

Either way, you can do it. If I could do it, anyone can. I believe grad school is far more about endurance of academic bullshit than the material you are learning.

@HoaryMarmot

Nope, academics ruined the concept of higher ed for me. NC had one of the finest university systems when I was accepted to Chapel Hill in 1985. My parents couldn't afford it then.

Now the same schools are full of PhDs who don't work, don't mentor and complain about having office hours. They get the lion's share of the money, all the benefits, and put in four days a week. They live in a different world, my friend, and they will ask you to do some crazy stunts to get that piece of paper. Just grit your teeth and do it. I don't think I would have survived a PhD. The suck-up factor would have been enough to make me murderous.

Go for it!

Great... to me it's all about the money. If it will get you a better pay then go for it. Ive studied and became so many different craftsman. My last job was a tech for rotating equipment. I had already been a millwright and machinist. Knowledge is power brother.

@HoaryMarmot well alrighty... you know what you got to do.

I'm in a master's program and am in my late 50s. I may not finish the degree. It's the license endorsement that I need. It's not really rough being in a master's program, but my job is way more than 40 hours during the school year. Thats what makes it rough for me.

This is the 3rd masters program I've begun. I was within a couple classes of finishing the second time. I even did the project. Then I had health issues.

I have a friend who is getting his PhD. He seems to be able to pace himself quite nicely.

My father was actually sued by one of his students because he didn't have a Master's Degree. In his speciality (Organic Chemistry), he could go straight from BS to Phd. He didn't see any reason to spend the money and time for a Master's so he went for it. He did tell me it was a lot harder to do.

This was when he was in his 20's and in the late 50's/early 60's, so I really can't tell you how it is now.

If you're enthuastic about this, by all means, do it!
