This afternoon, I'm going to see a local production of Jesus Christ Superstar. My parents saw it in Chicago when it was new (we lived nearby in Indiana at the time), but I was too young to join them. Then we had the album in the house. I loved the album as a kid and knew all the words.

Now I have mixed feelings about the show. Two of my co-workers are in the production, so I'm mostly interested in supporting them. I also still enjoy the music.

Are there any religious things that you still enjoy?

I've always liked this musical. The songs are great, and I enjoy the perspective. I always listen to it on Good Friday. One of my BFF's and I get together on Good Friday to listen to it. Not because we are religious, but because we like it for the same reasons.

That's a cool tradition! I'm downloading the album to my phone now. I may make it a tradition myself!

It is perfectly reasonable to enjoy music with a religious theme just for the pleasure of the performance. We rarely mean what we are saying when we sing!

The show is over. Spoiler alert: Jesus dies in the end.

Ha! But if you were a Christian, the end would only be the beginning!

@pashaonenine yes, they expect a sequel!

Heck yeah! I totally envy you! JCSS is a great show, whether one believes or not!

And yes, I still like prior religious stuff that I liked before disbelief set in. No need to toss out the baby with the bathwater! Lots of movies, songs, and plays are fiction. Biblical stuff can fall into that same category. (;

King Herod’s Song

Jesus, I am overjoyed
To meet You face to face
You've been getting quite a name
All around the place
Healing cripples
Raising from the dead
And now I understand You're God
At least that's what You've said
So You are the Christ
You're the great Jesus Christ
Prove to me that You're divine
Change my water into wine
That's all You need do
And I'll know it's all true
C'mon King of the Jews
Jesus, You just won't believe
The hit You've made around here
You are all we talk about
You are the wonder of the year
Oh, what a pity
If it's all a lie
Still I'm sure that You can rock
The cynics if You try
So You are the Christ
You're the great Jesus Christ
Prove to me that You're no fool
Walk across my swimming pool
If You do that for me
Then I'll let You go free
C'mon, King of the Jews
I only ask things I'd ask any superstar
What is it that You have got
That puts You where You are?
I am waiting, yes, I'm a captive fan
I'm dying to be shown
That You are not just any man
So if You are the Christ
Yes, the great Jesus Christ
Feed my household with this bread
You can do it on Your head
Or has something gone wrong?
Jesus, why do You take so long?
Come on, King of the Jews
Hey, aren't You scared of me, Christ?
Mr. Wonderful Christ
You're a joke, You're not the Lord
You are nothing but a fraud
Take Him away
He's got nothing to say
Get out, You King of the, get out
Get out, You King of the Jews
Get out, You King of the Jews
Get out of my life

That was a great song! It's amazing that as a kid I didn't really think about any of the lyrics at all! I was just telling someone else that now I kinda understand it. And I'm left feeling like it's not really very religious at all. Which is good. 🙂

Interested to hear what you thought of it!

It’s about to start and a HUGE guy just sat down in front of me. Grrrrrrr

I listened to the record a thousand times as a kid, but I never really got the story. Now I think I do. And I don't think it's really religious, which is not exactly what I expected.

It starts with Judas (played my my coworker) who doesn't think Jesus is really supernatural. King Herod thinks he's a fraud too. I think it plays out like a pretty believable version of events. If Jesus was a real person, he wasn't magical, but he managed to attract a cult-like following.

The local folks did a valiant job with an exceptionally challenging piece of work. The singing was often great, but even when the actors had a hard time I give them a tremendous amount of credit for passion they put into it. They had a live band which was very good.

@carlyhorton Thanks for the review! I will keep an open mind next time this show comes to my city and actually go and enjoy it 🙂

@Jellifish1 And Jesus came across as a bit of a whinny little bitch, too. LoL.

Sure. I enjoy black gospel music, mainly because so many great soul singers came out of it in the 50's and 60's and it swings. It rocks.

I love that show...

Enjoy the show. Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Weber wrote a great rock opera. Just because it's based upon a fictional character doesn't mean you can't enjoy it. Do you only read biographies and not novels? Go, tap your feet, sing along, and have fun

I was getting the confirmation for the ticket purchase at the very moment I heard the alert that you'd replied 🙂 It starts in an hour and a half. I'll let you know how it was 🙂
