Interesting how a post about belief can trigger some folks. Isn't this agnostic.com? Isn't this the philosophy and meaning group? It's not the fact and evidence group. Perhaps someone should create that group.
Fact is we all have beliefs and we're all ignorant. Why not enjoy it and have some fun speculating about it? That's how I feel about belief amongst those that aren't indoctrinated into one firm never changing belief or another.
Interesting how people with "beliefs" are usually associated with some sort of religious group - with is the antithesis of agnostic dot com.
While you state "you feel" or "you believe", you aren't being a philosopher. Philosophy includes questioning, critical discussion, rational argument, and systematic presentation ... not "feelings" or "beliefs". So for you to post about a belief on a non-belief site as "enjoying it" or "having fun with it" and "That's how I feel about belief", you are trying to twist this site into something it is not.
You make broad statements like "Fact is we all have beliefs" or "we're all ignorant" which sound nice to you, but actually are untrue. When you start a logical argument from a fallacy, no step that follows is valid. If you have never been on a debate team, you might want to educate yourself on logic and logical fallacies. Philosophy is all about debate, and you are woefully ignorant of how that actually works.
And since you apparently are not agnostic, maybe you should try "enjoying it" or "having fun with it" on a christian site, because once you get your foot in the door, you are probably going to start proselytizing - which will trigger many of us.
I'm not in a box, and I have no reason to wish to relate to you.
As your profile says pointedly "I could give a fuck about being liked or popular", so I have no clue why you want people to relate to you.
@FvckY0u
You say, "I could care less if you relate to me" but you seem pretty hellbent on convincing me to think outside the box so I can relate to you. Sad.
@FvckY0u
You should relax more. You seem upset.
Maybe if you weren't so angry, more people could relate to you in your box.
We all have beliefs, and as long as they do not harm anyone I would not want to change any. But it would be a very dull site if it was just an echo chamber, indeed there would be no point in coming here. So I relish the open expression of alternate opinions and friendly respectful debate.
Yes, we all have beliefs. As a former theist who once studied for the Pentecostal ministry I am finding that most beliefs are pure bullshit with no evidence, but you are entitled to your beliefs.
It's funny (not funny) how people turn nasty when challenged to produce evidence to support their positions.
@anglophone I'm matter of fact here. I have no evidence and neither does anyone else. Science maybe. Religion no.
@anglophone Philosophic conversation requires asking questions and stating possibilities (not necessarily positions). I found nothing objectionable to that post and agree with this one.
Most RELIGIOUS beliefs are bullshit. But belief in science, belief in rule of law, belief in egalitarianism, belief in democracy are worthy. Some would even say noble.
I didn't comment on the post in question because I generally avoid matters relating to philosophy.
To me, all philosophy is are other people's opinions, and I don't put much credence in those things.
Everyone gets to think whatever they want. As we've seen from just about everything over the past few years, facts don't tend to matter in the formulation of opinions.
As much as I would dearly love to see my grandmother and all the dogs I've lost, I know I won't, and I've made my peace with that.
Him: "I believe in God."
Me: "You have beliefs? You have my deepest sympathy."
"Fact is all we have is beliefs..." that made me laugh
I know people who are really militant about their non-belief, and some who just don't care.
I guess I'm in the latter group. I don't give a darn whether people believe one thing or another, as long as they are nice, helpful people, and don't try to push their beliefs on others. Unfortunately, proselytizing happens all too often, leaving Agnostics with a strong aversion to believers of all types. Hope this helps.
