What if we are wrong? And there is something out there? But b/c we are stuck on words to define it like 'God' we dismiss it?
We can still be good people, but we are calling 'IT' different things. Dividing us.

If, and that is a big if, there is something beyond our comprehension then it is not focused on us. All religions are a construct of humans. There has never been evidence that proved otherwise. That means I live for today, try to be the best I can be and worry about tomorrow if/when it comes.

You make the conjecture that there might be "something out there". Do you have any evidence to support that conjecture?

As far as I am concerned, the natural world is all there is, and that includes us Great Apes scuttling around on a quite unremarkable ball of rock orbiting a quite unremarkable star that is moving inside a quite unremarkable galaxy and making fools of ourselves.

If we think we know… we are guaranteed to be wrong. Humans are not capable of understanding ultimate reality. We are capable, with some luck, of finding adequate food, shelter, and mates. Everything science knows about the universe is less than a drop in the ocean of reality. Whatever we choose to call the Great All in All, or how ever we characterize it, it was here before we were, and it will surely be here after we are gone.

Your first sentence implies two assumptions, that there is an ultimate reality, and that we are not capable of understanding it. Ever considered that there isn't an 'ultimately reality' and that we already might understand this? As Lawrence Krauss has said, assuming that 'the universe and everything' must have some 'big explanation' is a reflection of human presumptuous thinking, a product of our cause and effect wired evolved brains. I think he's right.

@David1955
I'm sure different people envision different things when they hear the phrase "ultimate reality". When I use that phrase, all I mean is "whatever is". It seems axiomatic to me that whatever is, is. I don't see how it could be otherwise. And I don't know of a single scientist who claims that humanity has all the answers that can be asked about reality. As is often the case with these matters, it's probably more of a linguistics problem than a physics problem. I'm not talking about a "big explanation". I'm talking about simply knowing the full nature of "what's out there". We don't. If we did, all scientists could retire. What are they doing every day?

I strongly believe all that happens is you go to sleep and never wake up.

2

I'm also not worried about being good people. Those who have religious guilt might be worried about it though.

Out where?

Ah, beyond the edge of the universe! 😉

(Hey, half a tick, I have just assumed that the universe has an edge. Naughty me! 😉 )
