Bernie explains what happened with the vote for the rail workers...and why the ultra rich are getting richer faster than ever.

The question remains...why is it legal for big business to enjoy record breaking profits, record breaking salaries for its' CEO's...Why"?

Thanks for the replies.

The question - indeed - remains.

Everything is legal until it is made illegal. Capitalism is working exactly as intended with record breaking profits and record breaking management salaries. We subscribe to capitalism as our economic system so why would we make its success illegal?

@LovinLarge I'm not suggesting an "illegal" status for profit making and profit taking...

I'm just tired of seeing the growing separation of the very rich and very poor,

Maybe higher tax brackets...like in the Eisenhower days?

@Robecology The fundamental goal of capitalism is profit, so taxation of any measure is undesirable. You hear some capitalists complain that "taxation is theft" but taxation is provided for in the Constitution. So even the founding fathers did not envision a strictly capitalist economy.

During WWII, the highest income bracket had a 94% tax rate to finance the war. Today it is 40% and we still have about 750 billionaires and 22 million millionaires. About 11% of Americans live in poverty and almost a million die from poverty related issues each year.

So capitalism is working for some people but not for others. What we really have is a somewhat mixed economy given the social safety net but still many people falling through the cracks. This is one aspect of our current domestic crisis with democracy hanging in the balance.

@LovinLarge With ' democracy hanging in the balance." that's the truth.

Why should it be illegal? More important how could any Government decide what amount of profit is "too much" or what amount of CEO (or any other position) compensation is "too much"?

@Robecology The "Peoples Republic of California" does or attempts to do many strange things. In this case I believe this will be nothing more than a political stunt that never becomes a law.

@Alienbeing I hope you're wrong...but I'm afraid you're right.

@Robecology If you lived here you would know California Democrats promise everything, and deliver prctically nothing......... except higher State taxes.

Politicians don't make the rules, the 1 percent does.

They do it because they can get away with it: greed overpowers social justice.

We're ruled by the 1% of the 1% wealthiest......and they're getting richer.

Capitalism.

money buys the rules and the politics to make it so.
