Because so many other "founding fathers" hated him, especially after the revolution worked, he is often ignored by history. Yet, his writings were very influential at the time. He wanted to go farther with the revolution; he then went to France where he came close to losing his head during their revolution (when those in revolt turned on one another).

They hated him because he exposed their scams. Even Washington had one going, involving rights for all lands to come, so Paine was cutting into their greatness. We got Age Of Reason from his time in France.
