I was watching Monday Night Football tonight and a young man, Bills safety Damar Hamlin, collapsed on the field, wasn't responsive. He was given CPR and taken away by ambulance. No word yet about the 24 year old, but the game was ended and has now been officially suspended. It's the first time I've ever heard of an NFL game called like this. It doesn't sound good. I hope he survives. He is being intubated, in critical condition. This transcends sports, it's about concern for the life of a fellow human being. BTW, piece of shit Republicans are on Twitter, blaming this tragedy on the vaccine. Not a surprise!

This physician explained what probably happened. Short answer, he hit at exactly the wrong place at the wrong time. Bottom line his odds of survival could be as high as 40% if effective CPR started within 3 min after his heart went into fibrillation. Otherwise they could be grim.

i once knew a guy who had a heart attack at age 23, after doing well at Boot Camp & several months on an aircraft carrier, just 'one of those things', it got him thrown out of the Navy, which he had joined to escape WV and a coal-mining 'career', poor thing. Slender, looked perfectly healthy...........
It happens.

Unknown pre-existing heart condition.

That seems odd to me. I mean, this is a sport that they've known for YEARS causes tremendous damage and death, but they still play with minimal modification for safety. Why stop now?

I've seen players get paralyzed and badly injured in American football. I've never seen deaths, hopefully this man survives. I have seen players die in basketball game. Great ones. Pete Maravich died in a pick up game. Reggie Lewis died on the court. Hank Gathers, a great player who led the nation, Division 1 scoring and rebounding died on the court in a nationally televised game. This was the closest I've seen to that, hopefully this has a different ending. NFL isn't the only sport that is dangerous. Baseball is dangerous, ice hockey scarier than NFL, soccer is dangerous, horse racing, polo. People have died getting beaned in a cricket match.

@barjoe I'm not saying football is the only dangerous sport. I'm saying that collectively, as a society, we all seem to be fine with countless horrible injuries for the sake of getting to watch sports. Why pretend otherwise?

@ChestRockfield Auto accidents, boating accidents, helicopter crashes, choking incidents...nobody gets outta here alive.

Is that vaccine the cocaine injection in each nostril?

@FrayedBear I was hoping no-one would go there. It had to be you.

@barjoe what does that tell you Joe? In my time I've been likened to the unknown soldier, the boy who shouted "the emperor is stark bollock naked" . . .

I have seen more than my share of people hauled off in ambulances between my playing days and officiating days. This is the first time I have seen two things, CPR being given on the field and the game being suspended. The news is that he had cardiac arrest. I'm not going to speculate, but I wish him well.

I have never seen an ambulance drive onto the field in NFL game. I can't remember an NFL game being postponed for to an injury. Young fellow is fighting for his life. Sucks.
