If you drive east out of Wilcox PA (population 350) to to top of a mountain ridge, you might be surprised to come across this relic of a church. This place of worship was called “The Holy Cross” church. Quite original, I know…..🤷🏻♂️. There’s nothing else out here but a couple farms and this rather large church?! Wilcox had 500 people at its peek in the 50s and 60s, so most of the folks in the early 20th century must have supported this church up here on this mountain. I can envision the struggle it would have been for them to get up this mountain road in the winter, as winters in Elk County were known for being quite brutal?!
I moved to Elk County around 10 years ago, and have no idea what year this beast closed its doors, but thank you Jesus it did!!!
Anyone no what the symbolism on the door represents?! 🤨

A left leaning church. Unusual.

Not a fan of religion but you have to admit it has inspired some interesting architecture. I think I'd buy that church and use it for a house if I lived around there.

I agree! There's a church from the 1800s in Star Idaho that was purchased privately and turned into a coffee shop/bakery with trees offering shade if it was too nice out to miss the weather, and it also offered the best atmosphere. An antique church turned into a laid back coffee shop.

Someone had tried to purchase it on their FB page back in 2019. Clearly they didn’t sell it….👀

Typical of religions, waste tons of money in real estate, I bet the church still owns the land, motherfuckers!

Possibly, but land is el cheapo here in rural pa. You wouldn’t believe how much house you can buy in Wilcox for 100K….👀

Someone started a page on FB to raise money for a roof to in 2019 in an attempt to save this church!? Looking at the pics from 2019, it appears they did manage to upgrade the roof. But not much more…..

@Buck add 100 to other 100 and pretty soon you're in billions owned by churches all over the world, yet tgey still want more and keep it tax exempt, the motherfuckers

The symbol is a monogram for Jesus, a contraction for how you spell it in Greek but with a Latin alphabet.

My religion is boring. I know lets do it in a foreign language and use the wrong alphabet, that should make it sparkle. LOL How sad really.

Zeuser is correct and this is common in Catholic Churches. in fact, there is a Holy Cross Church in the town of Cuba, Missouri where I work. They have a cemetery with the same name.

@DenoPenno There’s a Holy Cross Cemetery just up the road from this church, lmao….😂

@DenoPenno There appears to be a few more occupants at the Cemetery than the church though…..🤷🏻♂️
