Arctic Sea Ice

The media and government websites often report on declining Arctic sea ice extent as an important indicator of greenhouse gas induced climate change. NASA’s Arctic sea ice page reports that “Summer Arctic sea ice extent is shrinking by 12.2% per decade due to warmer temperatures.” This value is for the month of September only from 1979 to 2023 and it obscures the fact that the trend of Arctic sea ice has changed in recent years. This graph shows that the annual average Arctic sea ice extent trend from 1915 to 2023 is a positive 0.21 million square kilometres (km2) per decade. The full satellite era monthly data is shown below.
The Antarctic and global sea ice extent are displayed on the FoSS website at Library > Climate Science > Polar Regions & Glaciers > Polar Region Sea Ice.

An article at The Daily Skeptic says “Arctic sea ice on January 8th stood at its highest level [for that date] in 21 years.” This graph show the January 20, 2024 Arctic sea ice extent is at the highest at that date since 2010. The declining sea ice extent from 1982 to 2007 has been blamed on GHG alone. Jim Steele wrote “But any critical thinking person can see warm Arctic temperatures are due to inflows of warm Atlantic water not a CO2 climate crisis.” The Atlantic waters have warmed partly due to CO2, but the sea ice extent decline to 2007, which is almost identical to the 2023 average sea ice extent, can’t be explained by GHG alone. In much of the Arctic, winter temperatures decline by 30 °C to 33 °C from summer temperatures. Steele says “Where Atlantic waters enter the Arctic at 70 degrees north latitude, summer temperatures reach +8.1 °C, and despite winter cooling, temperatures don’t drop below freezing averaging +2.5 °C.” The inflow of warm Atlantic waters raises the Arctic temperatures by around 30 °C higher than what would be expected from the Arctic’s normal greenhouse effect. The natural Arctic Oscillation and its 1990s shift in wind direction drove out much of the Arctic’s multi-year sea ice. Steele expects that as the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation switches to its cool phase less Atlantic water will enter the Arctic Ocean.

If it was a serious issue; Obama, Biden, and all the others crying about it would not have purchased homes next to the ocean.

We are already seeing open water at the north pole in summer, something that was unheard of only 50 years ago. And the loss of Arctic sea ice is accelerating. Only 25 years ago, scientists were predicting an ice-free arctic summer by the year 2100. Now it looks like we will get there by 2050, if not sooner. The distance polar bears have to swim in order to get to the ice keeps on increasing.

But lateral extent of the ice does not tell the whole story. You also have to look at the thickness of the ice. It has gone from 20 feet in winter down to only one or two feet over the last half century.

True to form, @1patriot's post provides misleading or outright false information. Once again he earns a rating of bullshit. 🐂💩

i submitted my information sources your is just blab from a self proclaimed genius.... and you have been up to see the polar bear.... we have a lot of polar bear. do you want a another article from me you won't read LOL [nsidc.org]
or your just going to call it fake like you do....

14 years ago, there was a TED Talk by a man who literally swam across the North Pole.

The graph may seem to show what you claim, but where is the link to verify your claimed source for the data? I doubt it came from the sources you claim.

TED Talk swimming across the North Pole...

[nsidc.org] yes the the site you made claim that you doubt is there you just needed to copy and paste but here it is they update it daily....

@snytiger6 you do realize that Ted talk are the oligarch that sell you a line of bull shit from time to time. we had ships sail across are north many times one wooden one back in the 1910 or so i would have to look for that news paper article...

@1patriot I have seen news reports that the long searched for "Northwest passage: which was chalked up to fantasy, is becoming a reality as snow and ice melt North of Canada, and some shippers are rerouting above North America, as at least for part of the year it is now navigable.

As the Panama Canal is hampered by droughts, reducing the shipping that can cross there. As most of the "canal" are made up of fresh water lakes, the canal traffic has been reduced, and the drought is attributed to global climate changes.

To me, I thought it was very obvious that if you cut down the rain forests year after year for over 60 years, it will eventually affect local weather patterns. Thus, rainfall levels in South and Central America have changes due to the actions of man.

@snytiger6 the actions of man you mean like weather modification? i would agree with you but cut parts of forest down that grows back does not affect weather near as much as government weather modification.

If anyone here doesn't believe our weather is manufactured by gov here's indisputable proof.
50 countries in the world have weather manipulation systems of which Canada is one of them and China has a weather system that can control the weather in an area the size of india. Droughts, floods, atmospheric rivers, snow all made and directed by design.

@snytiger6 the northwest passage was found years ago because icebergs snow etc. because they were using wooden ships Henry Hudson famous exposition. today we use ice breakers and they want to ship grain from there to europe. the Chinese are speaking of making the the belt and road for north and south america run railline straight down to Argentina. and they would ship goods to hudson bay.

According to AOC the world’s going to end in a few years anyway. We might as well get drunk and enjoy it while it lasts.
