I could understand people complaining about erecting such a scary looking statue in front of a nursing home or orphanage.

Such a statue could be scary to widows or the orphan children.

Religion ... pure and faultless is this: to help widows and orphans in need and avoiding worldly corruption. James 1:27

The Christian right in America doesn't believe in Freedom of Religion.

That is true. They wish to recreate the kind of religious persecution that drove the original migration to the Americas to achieve some religious freedom(s). They just can't imagine that it may not be their particular brand of religion that would end up on top wielding power over others.

In his book "Dogme et ritual de la haute magie (1861), the influential French occultist Éliphas Lévi created the Baphomet that has become a recognized occult icon used by many occult religions to this day. Most believe it to be an ancient symbol, but to two adoring children and the 5 pointed star were added by Aleister Crowley for the frontispiece his own book Magick published in 4 volumes in the early 20th century, to avoid having to pay the Levi estate royalties.
Ancient Baphomet statues and drawings were simply a large goats head.

My parents used to consider that image the absolute worst. It's amazing how dumb some smart people can be.
