Please explain, I see lots of references to 'Cinqo de Mayo' and other than it's 5th May (presumably) what does it mean?

This is a serious question, thx 🙂

Is "5 (cinco) de Mayo" and on this date some Mexicans -mostly in USA- commemorate the Mexican victory over the French army (Battle of Puebla)
