Since catholics can confess their sins and have them forgiven, it kinda takes the edge off sinning.

"Oh, darn! I stole, had a sexual relationship with my neighbor's wife, idolized the last president ... but I'm sorry."

A couple of "our fathers" and "hail marys" and you are forgiven, and a new sinless soul.

Yeah, I believe the confess and forgive idea just enables more "sinning", as they know they can be forgiven no matter what they do.

The idea of keeping confessions secret makes things much worse. A person can confess, and feel like they are actually a good person, even thought they do nothing to change their behavior(s). Because it is secret, they don't experience any peer pressure to change and be a better person.

Secrets are almost always toxic. They undermine relationships between people and undermines fairness in business dealings.

No doubt that Christian apologists are lying to you. It's part of their job.

Almost all of their job. Christian apologists exist in a subculture of their own creation, which is almost wholly concerned with the business of training people to lie more effectively.

That's the paradox for most/all(?) religions, but Christianity especially. One cannot be a believer without losing your integrity, honesty, and honor. (and a whole lot more). Religions are suicide for the soul/heart.

Christian apologists exist in a subculture of their own creation, which is almost wholly concerned with the business of training people to lie more effectively.

@Fernapple Which neatly explains their embrace of a pathological liar.

A sin means to break the law.. explain. Legal for police to lie to you, but illegal to lie to them. They have guns, you don't. Easier to kill you
