Some people assign everything to God; that's how their mind works, or how they're screwed up. I remember how, when a plane crashed, someone said to me how God heard the prayers of the relatives of those who did survive. I was nonplussed at the grotesque implication, that somehow God controlled the plane crash so as to kill just the ones he disfavored. I asked the person if God ignored the prayers from the families of those that perished. It's a cheesy, infantile game promulgated by the shallow-minded. Sadly, we have no power to increase IQ... (Yes, yes, I know many smart people are religious, but you know what I mean).

I would think "we're fucked"

This is one of my peeves. i usually shun anyone that goes this way and then things go sour.

These responses so far are wonderful! I will use many depending on the situation since I have been simply saying “good for you”.

to me it’s a cop out. “don’t worry, it’s in god’s hands”? people expect too much from god. like he’s sitting around with a laundry list of people’s problems to take care of. you can’t pay that rent? don’t give that bill to god. go get a second job. can’t lose the weight? get your ass on a treadmill

Hopefully it's in the hands of the Goddess Venus!

An excellent question.

It never happens to me.

But then I live in Australia so you don't get that very often at all.

I think if someone said that to me my answer would be "I hope he can catch".

I say I am glad I can rely on science and the resourcefulness of the amazing human race

No reaction, IDC.... They don't want to take any responsibility, why should I sweet it?

Like the kids in Africa? What does he have against African kids?

Ask if god washed his hands first ??

If they seem aggressive, I look them in the eye without affirmation and move on to other discussion.

If they are in pain, I offer support and don't complicate their healing with my own agenda.

If they are friends, I listen and may offer up my own version of their beliefs as a means of affirmation.

Either avoiding accountability or making themselves feel better about not having control.

I could take their hands, look them in the eye and sing, Michael Row The Boat Ashore... sarcasm is an art.

"Good luck with that".
