First year but I've never had a hobby or activity that introduced me to kinder, more helpful and interesting new friends. In order to be successful with bee hive maintenance, you must have an easygoing and patient temperament. If you're not gentle and calm, there is a greater likelihood that you'll get stung.

There is a gentleman in my neighborhood that does this. Are you marketing the honey? He is also has a greenhouse and is a good source for starter plants.

Just got my firstv three hives going this year. If they make it through the winter with the honey stores i leave to them, I'll harvest honey next summer.
I know next to nothing about bee keeping but sounds like an interesting hobby.

Really fascinating. Always learning.
We had commercial hives on our farm in Oregon. Love those critters. I mentioned to someone else on here that they recognize people. Whenever we would head out to the hives, several would come out and land on us. I don't think it was a greeting as such. Probably more a signal to others still coming out of the hives that all was well. It was fascinating. I started helping with the maintenance when I was a bit older than 6 and it was one of the few chores I had that was a real pleasure.
With the problems we're having now, we need more beekeepers, even if it's nothing more than a hobby. The bee population where we live has dwindled to almost none in the ten years we've had this property. We keep hydration pots out for them during the summer months and make sure they have plenty of flowers.

I took several beekeeping classes over the last year with 200 plus interested people and I learned enough to feel fairly confident. All together we must have a thousand hives in my county to pollinate the apple orchards and other crops. Last year was tough on bees and 50% of hives didn't survive the winter.
I just ordered 2 packages with 10,000 bees and a queen. The queen is of a line that is hygienic meaning her offspring are fairly resistant to mites and hive diseases. My goal is to produce organic honey with bees selected for toughness.
