Anyone else have a recurring dream about their death?

For years I had the same dream a couple of times each year, it used to wake me up but over time I grew accustomed to it and would just watch it in the 3rd person like it was a movie.
It always occurred at night in a back alley in a big city, it's raining hard and I am homeless. I have a piece of cardboard and several layers of clothes on but I am cold and tired and feeling miserable and hungry. I know that it is after curfew and I am trying to keep a low profile because the security patrols beat the homeless if they find them outdoors after dark. Sure enough I see a Latino soldier come down the alley towards me, I greet him kindly in my best Spanglish in the hopes that he will leave me alone. He has a freshly lit cigarette and he smiles at me as he approaches me lying prone on the pavement with my soggy piece of cardboard, he squats down with his assault rifle in one hand and asks me a question (I can never remember what the question is) when I don't have an answer he stands and smashes me in the head with the butt of his rifle. I can feel the blood leaking out of my skull and I know I am dying, I hear him laugh as he flicks the cigarette butt at me and the world fades to nothingness.

When I was a kid, I had the exact same dream over and over for years. Except I was a mouse, in a little anthro-mouse town. Basically this villain was trying to kill people, so I kept trying to get them away, and we'd keep running into his traps (laser field in the theater) until finally I think I blew up in there, except it cut to third person with this black background, and a grandpa mouse walking on top of a TNT crate with his cane, and it'd zoom out and there's a whole stack of these, and the first one blows up and knocks him flying down, each exploding and knocking him around as he falls past until he dies around the bottom.

Side note, I realized a few years into transitioning (FTM/demi-boy) that I was a boy-mouse in that dream, something I'd somehow never picked up on, and didn't show up in any of my other dreams until much closer to my realizing and coming out as trans. Being a guy wasn't even remotely on my conscious radar at that age, so it makes me wonder what was so special about it.

You might dream this when you are helpless or in a situation you can't control. Your subconscious takes that fearfulness and runs with it to the worst possible scenario.

Possibly but I don't see it as the worst possible scenario, in the dream I am ready to go and without regret and more like a relief. I have often been in difficult situations but rarely have I felt helpless or out of control but that's what I do, I'm a fixer by nature and profession so for me bad problems are just more interesting to fix, more of a challenge and more profitable for me as well.

Sometimes I actually dream about 45 but actually that's more a dream about the death of our country, not only me.

Sounds to me like a confidence issue. You're terrified that you don't know or can't do something. Either in general or something specific. Accept that you have limits just like everyone else and next time the soldier will share his cigarette with you and leave you alone.

A plausible interpretation except that confidence has never been something I lacked. generally or specifically. I know the soldier is going to kill me the moment he smiles at me, he does a little shoulder check just before he approaches and I'm not afraid at all, instead I am resigned and even content. I've had a good run but the world has gone to hell in a hand cart and I know it's my time to get off the ride. The sound of my skull crunching is pretty bad though, makes me grit my teeth just thinking about it, the pain actually isn't too bad, more of an assisted suicide than a murder. Oh, I also know that I am 73 years old in the dream, don't know why but I know it and also the city is Philadelphia but a lot has changed.

@Surfpirate make plans to emigrate in your later years!

Whoah!! I have the same exact dream once or twice a year! It’s just as you describe it. The only difference is, I’m the soldier.

Damn that's too bad, I felt a little sorry for him.

I don't put that much stock in dreams or hallucinations, talked to jesus Friday night and told me an event in my life that happened Sunday and changed my life for the better for the near future. I have to give him credit for what he arranged Friday to happen Sunday. Beyond that I am sill the same atheist of Thursday.

I've never spoken with Jesus, how was he as a person? Just curious and glad your life changed for the better and that you are still an Atheist.

@Surfpirate I was like in an outside bar and he was next to me, I recognized him and noded like you do someone you barely know and he simply told me " how you like the thing I arranged for you with the number 6?" I have no idea what he was talking about but I went on about my biz. That was Friday... well Sunday happen to be the 6th and something I was not expecting or looking forward to happen occurred changing a lot of my current life. Cant tell to any xian in my life because they will run with the football. I did mentioned to my sister on saturday without details. Just that I saw him on dream or hallucination. Was pretty vivid. I may not remember it in a couple weeks. I am a pretty relaxed, no stress kind of fella. Still a non militant Atheist, I am not at war with god, church or religion.

@GipsyOfNewSpain He's kinda of vague isn't he? Odd that he would ask how you liked something that hadn't happened yet, how are you supposed to answer that? It would have been much better if he had said something like 'bet $666 on the 6th horse in the 6th race on May the 6th.' Maybe that's why they say 'and then I woke up and it had all been just a dream'. 🙂

@Surfpirate it did ocurred to me, I am 6 minutes away from Maryland Live Casino. But I don't gamble, fish or hunt.

Can't say I've ever had a dream about my own death, recurring or otherwise.

I have a pretty active dream life, I feel it's better than just being comatose for a third of my life and even if I die in my dream I still wake up in the morning.

That's horrible. I wonder what it means.

It was a horrible dream the first few times but I got used to it. Maybe it means nothing, maybe it's an indicator of how my life ends and if it is then I will know what's coming. 🙂 I do find it keeps me in touch with my mortality and that helps me live more meaningfully, every morning I wake up is a pleasant surprise.
