Further upstream there is a colony of platypus and they recently found a rare crustacean. This is evidence of the purity of the water. We are too south for crocodiles and do not have rivers going to the sea so no sharks. The most dangerous things in the river are humans and rats but the latter are no where near as bad as in places like Tokyo and New York. The annual fishing competition attracts several thousands and some decent sized fish are caught. The introduced carp is pretty to look at but a pest worse than rats and it is slowly being eradicated. The local lakes are renowned for the trout and red fin plus a bit of Murray cod.
I should have dug out the similar view from about 2004 to 2011 when the drought broke and the river flooded. During those years it was bank to bank dried mud.
The bridge I was standing on to take the photographs was only commenced in 2017 and completed this year. It connects one street of millionaire's slums with another on the opposite bank.
The river is also somewhat illusory. To the west and just round the corner out of sight is the weir holding all the water in. In the 7 years since the flood when the downside of the weir was higher than what you currently see which is upstream, the weir gates have been dropped only a few times. The river continues about 100 kilometers not to the sea but inland toward but nowhere near the centre of Australia.

wow! & the pics of the flood - everywhere in australia seems to love its extreme weather conditions. we have regular floods here too. the house i just moved into lost its ground floor flat during the last one.
@walklightly Australia loves it's feasts and famines, floods and droughts and there are many instances of white man's stupidity in building in flood zones. Look at Gundegai which only recognised the bravery of Yarri and Jacky Jacky who saved one third of the town's population in 1852 by unveiling a statue in 2017 - 165 years later.[sbs.com.au].
@walklightly if you can listen to this wonderful suite written by John Warner many years ago "Yarri of Wiradjeri". I believe that the album can still be bought. John Warner is probably one of the finest folk song writers of the last forty years. The following gives an extensive history of Yarri and John's involvement.
