“Proud” to white?
Why? I didn’t choose my race
“Proud” to be American?
Why? I didn’t pick this place

Might as well be “proud” of my appearance
or “proud” of my smarts…
But I put credit where it’s due
and thank my parents for their parts

I prefer to place value
on the things that I’ve done
(Being born a white American
can’t be considered one)

I’m proud I love learning
that I write and I read
I’m proud of my drive
to excel and exceed

Religionists will tell you
“Pride is a sin”
Psychologists will say
that it’s vital within

I hold with the Buddhists
who put pride on the shelf
with the other “unskillful” attachments
that keep you away from yourself

So I’m careful and thoughtful
about my own pride
and I’m glad I can smile
when I look inside

Because I’m proudest of all
that I keep my heart clean
Looking for ways to divide people
is maladaptive and mean

Yes. It's an infantile disease.
