You've already gained points from writing a profile and answering profile questions, so just keep making comments and writing your own posts and when you reach level two you can private message people.
A link to FAQ and a website tutorial is on the homepage.
You can check on what members live near you by clicking on the "Meet" tab above and then on the "Members" tab in the drop down bar.
You can fill in locations, ages, etc.
