I did my good deed for the summer. I mowed a disabled American veterans yard with a push mower. I should have borrowed his riding lawn mower, but I figured it would mean more if I put something into it. What do you think?

I think he found that much more meaningful than a standard 'Thank you for your service'. 
Probably a pretty good work out for you as well.
