Decided to open up my hive today and see how my girls were doing...they had a decent amount of comb in the top brood box, but on at least one frame they were building from the bottom up instead of from the top down, so not sure what that means. Didn't get to locate the queen, as we were already sweating so much in our suits by that time that it was hard to see what we were doing! We added the Queen Excluder (white plastic screen) as well as the Flow Hive honey super on top...this will give the bees more room to expand....and store their honey!

How many times a year do you harvest honey? I used to get three harvests, based on what was flowering.

It hasn't even been a year yet that l've had them, so haven't even made an attempt to harvest. I am just now adding the Queen excluder, so no harvest til they fill some frames in the honey super. I'm not doing it for the honey anyway...it's for the bees!

@Free_2B_Me
You probably know already. But it's important to harvest the honey.

@bigpawbullets As someone who says they had bees, l would think you also know that the bees have to have enough honey for themselves first...the harvest comes after they produce a surplus. Most harvestable hives are a good 3 and 4 boxes high. I just now added my 3rd box today. I can assure you, l am keeping an eye on them and will harvest when the situation calls for it.

@Free_2B_Me
I'm sure you'll take great care of them!
Please let us know how the honey tastes!

I love watching them! Can't wait til they move up into the top box...it has an observation window, so you can look in and watch them working without disturbing them!

I love bees and envy you your hive. I have no advice to offer as I've never tried beekeeping.
