Repetitive posts are going to happen since new people are always joining but if any one post is over done it’s what to say when someone sneezes. It’s just so unimportant. Say bless you, fuck you or somthing in between. The problem with religion is it’s footing in politics and wanting to be taught in schools as if it was legitimate, I’ll gladly repeat those as the problem is real and ongoing. I really hope everyone on this site is going to vote because that’s important. As for sneezing I think we should be smart enough to navigate those waters. ... I apologize if I sound slightly ornery but we have a country to fix and frankly atheists are the best equipped people to fix it... I was reading the news and got pissed off as I always do with Mango Musilini. I run twitter pages to promote getting the vote out, I’m politically active and an activist... I’m also tired... as you were, rant done.

Repetitive posts are a problem for the established members, I agree. But I've since changed my mind about the subject...

Repetitive posts are unavoidable so long as new members keep joining but new members must still be welcomed, as I was. So I just ignore posts about topics I've heard before.

In fact it motivates me to create a post about a subject which is rarely discussed.

My man.

I think a simple "Don't get that snot on me, buddy" would suffice.

I say nothing. If that means everyone thinks I am a curmudgeon, oh well.

I’m with you. I don’t say shit. It’s a dumb tradition.

When I sneeze I usually get blessed by someone. I appreciate the sentiment but I also get a little irked that they just assume I'm a believer in their sky daddy too.

I don’t say anything and it has nothing to do with being an athiest.

Exactly. No need to say a damn thing.

I usually say "eww, gross," and give them some handi-wipes.

Well said. We not only need more atheists; we need more atheist voters.

We need to get rid of the hypocrites and the evangelicals. It's already too fucking late, but we can't start fixing theirbfucking mess until we get them out of the way.

I say “Gesundheit” but really why do we say anything?

There isn’t a word for when someone coughs, or a word for when someone burps, or a word for when someone farts. There isn’t a word for when someone has the hiccups. Why do we have the need to say something when they sneeze?

I like the explanations from the library of congress, but I really like the "responses from around the world" section on the same page.

Why do people say, “God bless you,” after someone sneezes?

There are varying accounts as to the origin of this response.  One belief is that it originated in Rome when the bubonic plague was raging through Europe.  One of the symptoms of the plague was coughing and sneezing, and it is believed that Pope Gregory I (Gregory the Great) suggested saying “God bless you” after a person sneezed in hopes that this prayer would protect them from an otherwise certain death.

The expression may have also originated from superstition.  Some people believe that the custom of asking for God’s blessing began when ancient man thought that the soul was in the form of air and resided in the body’s head.  A sneeze, therefore, might accidentally expel the spirit from the body unless God blessed you and prevented this from occurring.  Some ancient cultures also thought that sneezing forced evil spirits out of the body endangering others because these spirits might now enter their bodies.  The blessing was bestowed to protect both the person sneezed and others around him.

Sneeze responses from around the world:

English – “Bless you” or “God bless you”
German – “Gesundheit”
Greeks and Romans – “Banish the Omen”
Hindu – “Live” and responds “With you”
Zulu – “I am now blessed”

I think I'm going to start using "Banish the Omen".
