My family were once extremely prominent members in English history and owned many estates. So how does this work do I just go into one and declare I live there now or have I watched too much Jane Austin?

Some American asshole refuses my family permission to even visit my ancestors' castle in Scotland.

Why should you be able to visit? Your ancestors sold it. And they probably exploited/killed/corrupted someone else to get it in the first place.

@GoldenDoll
No, they were a drunken lot that earned it through service to Robert the Bruce.

@GoldenDoll my goodness would you get off it it's been centuries and all of history everywhere is painted in blood. The castles didn't do it stop holding us and castles responsible. Heads up guys we can't appreciate or enjoy anything because our ancestors were assholes

@Holysocks Like I said. They earned it by killing Rob's enemies.

@LadyAlyxandrea
Very aptly typed.

@GoldenDoll you're ALIVE today because of war and pillaging and bloodshed.
Ffs the computer and or phone you're using to rant and rave on was made in a Chinese or taiwanese sweatshop.
Please get off your high horse

I'd not be an ass about it. Anyone can come and visit, stay awhile. I got my chamber then we good

@LadyAlyxandrea Who do you think built those castles? Taylor Wimpey?

@GoldenDoll okay I'm blocking you

@LadyAlyxandrea
I don't have time for drama. It seems that's what she is after.

Those old estates are heavily mortgaged and have high taxes. You probably owe a lot of money. Please inquire so they can give you your bill to pay.

to be practical I couldnt show up at the farm my grandfather owned and declare it mine.Maybe things are different in England. ANd now I see where you get your beautiful complexion

Exactly. Why would any former owner expect to be allowed to visit? Look out for the queue!

Yes, you've watched too much fantasy tv.

It couldn't hurt to fire off an email asking if the family has any castles lying about that they don't need although they may send you an outstanding tax bill along with the title to a ruin in some English backwater. Be careful of what you ask for, you just might get it. 😉

You would need documentation that you have legitimate claim. We tried. My Dad has very ancient documentation that we own land. Unfortunately it isn't enough. Land and property ownership has changed hands over many centuries, so really...you'd be lucky.

Unfotunately, if you go back far enough, EVERYONE is related to somebody prominent. And unfortunately again, you might not be, because 1) it only follows one male line, not the dozens of other possibilities, and 2) there were no DNA tests then, so many a lady had a giggle when she produced an heir who was actually fathered by another. We could all stake a claim and justify it by these means, but who would want to? They exploited and owned the serfs who worked for them, which is why they became rich and "owned many estates". Most of the "prominent" families in English history got their prominence by foul means - slavery, corruption, exploitation, killing anyone who spoke against them, selling their daughters etc., so you might want to think twice about that. It's not necessarily something to be proud of.

Welcome to all of the entirety of history for every human on every continent.

Stake your claim girl ! You might end up wealthy ? On the other hand you might be deep in debt ?   Lol
