“It is better to be hated for what you are than to be loved for what you are not.” -André Gide, Autumn Leaves
Maybe so, but I've spent my life as an actor of sorts creating an image for others to see. We all do that to degrees. This is why our children have views of us that are not quite real. The image that you become depends on others that are around you. It is best to be yourself.
Hate causes trouble. I'd rather be loved for a lie.
No aggro.
I dunno, you're hated long enough it can get to you
I know what you mean and I’ve been on the receiving end of, not necessarily hate, but being looked down on I guess. And I changed from the person I wanted to be and even tried to convince myself at the time that doing so was a good thing. Change is not always bad, and just about everyone needs to make compromises in life if they want to get along with people around them, but maybe it’s more like to what extent are you willing to bow to the will of others? I guess you can interpret that quote different ways. You may be right, if hatred were aimed in my direction long enough, I might start to sing a different tune. I hope I never have to find out.
@zing I grew up in a small town. Everyone in that town hated me. Deeply. I started out changing into a hateful person, becoming the terrible person they believed me to be, then I started changing to be their cookie cutter stepford wives bullshit.
Even then they hated me. Then I tried suicide. It was bad. Unfortunately it wasn't so easy to just up and move away, either. Held captive financially.
Now I just resign to not caring anymore. It's still miserable but at least the worst is through
@LadyAlyxandrea When my ex left in 2014 I went through a lot but have taught myself not to hate. I know people who go to great extremes to tell me I "have to hate her." Why? Would it be because we went in different directions? Maybe because I could blame the breakup on her? These ideas do not seem wise to me. I even have a religious friend who told me god is good to me because I do not hate. She saw this. I did not tell her anything. I also do not believe in her god.
There's nothing so reviled as honest men in polite society.
