Every time someone's life is altered because of something that they say, brings us one step closer to losing our freedom of speech. When it does finally happen, people will be dumbfounded; won't be able to fathom how it happened. Roseanne may be uncouth, but this is supposed to be a free country. Not for long at this rate. Being offended is a choice.

Freedom of speech must apply to all.
Therefore exercising YOUR freedom of speech does not mean you are Free from being answered nor are you free from the consequences of that expression.

nice to see they put the person before money this time.

3

And ABC were perfectly free to decide they didn't want to associate with hateful people.

Zactly.

That is ludicrous! In this horrible political climate we are living in right now her comment is UNACCEPTABLE!!! I have been a huge fan of hers since she did her " Domestic Goddess" stand up on Carson. Even though I've known all along that she is a bit unhinged...I enjoyed her comedy...she is dead to me now and shame on ANYONE who tries to justify her tweet with the convenient "free speech" argument that haters use...it was hate speech...unacceptable!!! Should Black people not be offended by the racist venom out there rearing it's ugly head once again in this country because of the soulless demon in the WH? The one who's Made America HATE Again?

@SallyMc Wouldn't that be great?

The black people who are offended by something they perceived as racially insensitive can be offended, sure. But then they can get over it. Context is all that matters and even when a malicious context is experienced these are only words that you can scroll or move away from. We already have anti-harassment laws. Should we prohibit speech just because someone might find something offensive?

@Sheilap Think of Free Speech in a different light. I do not believe it was intended to shield citizens in a community from despairing others. The true intent of Free Speech has always been the ability to call for change or report government malfeasance.

In writing my governor from home I expressed my right to free speech. In return the governor expressed his right to fire me. There is a responsibly that comes with any type of public communication.

I would disagree with your assertion that speech is prohibited in this country.

@Sheilap how dare you...a privileged white woman tell people of color to "GET OVER IT!!" Hate speech feeds bigotry and more hate.

@Xena How dare you use color to try to act like you deserve some type of special privilege. I guarantee that my race has never made my life one iota better. I would be willing to bet that my life was far more of a struggle than people like you who accuse me of hating just because I'm a realist. Let me tell you something, ANYTHING can be offensive. And I mean anything. Who gets to choose who is coddled and who is punished for words that "hurt". Why is that people of color are allowed to be racist and try to white shame people like me, when not one of us were even around before the civil war? Why don't you talk about the WHITE people who gave their lives fighting in the civil war? I bet most black folks have no idea who Bob Dylan is what he did for the cause? How about Bernie Sanders? Were ya'all supporting him? He got arrested for fighting for equality. When I get called a "pink bitch" or "fucking cracker" of a fucking white bitch" do I get to cry scream hate crime? Please shoot me if I ever become that much of a snowflake. Grow up.

Also the "making America Hate again" comment was dead before it was ever spoken. Lives Matters, a super racist hate group, started their bullshit and violence WHILE we had a president in office. Still wouldn't have flown once Trump was elected. How do you figure that Trump is a racist? Oh is it because Mexican is a race? Oh wait a minute, Mexican is not a race is it? What proof do you have that Trump is racist? I'm waiting.

@Sheilap you are SO confused. I will only say that people of color have damn good reasons for feeling the way they feel about white people.

Fairly simple concept. Offend your employer; lose your job. That is an unavoidable fact of life.

5

no one shut her up. they just decided not to employ her

5

Her rights were not violated. She wasn't arrested, handcuffed, taken to jail, and charged with any crime. She has the freedom to say or tweet whenever she wishes. There are, however, consequences to ones actions. This is exactly how a racist should be dealt with.

1

And deciding who works for you is a choice, as is who you work with. She has enough of an audience to get picked up by a network who will embrace her..

4

Spreading racism and anti-semetism is more than uncouth -ITS WHITE TRASH BEHAVIOR.

The voice of sanity!!

It's freedom of speech. Thanks for helping it go away.

@Sheilap I think whistleblowers deserve more support than racists when it comes to freedom of speech.

I think what you really want is, "freedom of responsibility" from the consequences of what we say.
