Recently, I have been hearing a lot about the benefits of coconut oil, in particular, oil pulling for teeth. I think "pulling" is a bad choice of words, nevertheless, I have used this method for the last three days. I have been holding a teaspoon of coconut oil in my mouth for 20 minutes, then spit it out and rinse my mouth with warm water. I am amazed at the results. I wear Invisilign and my teeth were getting pretty stained, especially since I drink lots of tea. The benefits of oil pulling are: it rids the mouth and teeth of bacteria, promotes healthy gums, gets rid of plaque, and eliminates bad breath. It is also recommended that you take internally, 1-2 teaspoons of coconut oil daily but it must be organic and virgin and it has lots of health benefits for the heart, skin, hair, and even weight loss. If the thought of eating it makes you cringe, try adding it to your food. If interested, just Google it and see what you think.

I love to oil pull. Great exercise for the face too. FYI though, be aware that (like your gut) your mouth contains a world of bacteria, both good and bad, and the good will be killed along with the bad, which could cause some issues. I would suggest cutting back on it and use as maintenance rather than a daily routine. Try activated charcoal toothpaste and alternate with the oil pulling. Also did you know that if you spit the oil (coconut oil especially) down the toilet or sink drain it will harden and could cause plumbing blockages. I usually spit it into a paper towel and dispose of it in the trash.

Thanks for the info.

I've used oil-pulling for several months now. I add a drop of clove oil and tea tree oil to the coconut oil and swish for ten minutes then rinse. It got rid of a stale taste I had in my mouth and bleeding gums within a week, which is proof it works. Now I oil-pull a couple of times a week for maintenance.

Coconut oil is also very useful for controlling minor gum disease. After brushing the teeth rub some coconut oil directly into the gum margins. Spit out any excess.

I use an ionic toothbrush, bicarbonate of soda toothpaste and drink green tea to protect my teeth.

I also take a supplement - vitamin K2-MK7 three times a week, which helps the body to direct calcium to the bones and teeth.

Oil pulling can be done with other oils too, not just coconut. I read about one woman who used common cooking oil to reverse her gum disease.

I do all this because I don't trust dentists. There may be exceptions, but on the whole I find dentists to be unscrupulous greedy hyenas who create unnecessary work to get rich - which is actually physical assault.

Not many people know about the K2 effect. 👍

"Pulling" is supposed to be quite effective but I've found an easier method that has spared me from long sessions in the dentist's chair and big payouts to keep his kids in the finest schools and new Corvettes. About 20-25 years ago I was diagnosed with gum disease and lost a few teeth. I brushed regularly using a Sonicare brush and used a Waterpik but it wasn't enough. I smoked cigarettes for quite some time which aggravated the condition. A new dental tech was hired who took the x-rays and performed cleanings. She suggested that I try brushing with baking soda (not baking soda toothpaste). My dental health improved quickly. My condition is now described as "adult patient non-smoker with healthy teeth and gums" even though I continue to smoke. Find a cup or other container, pour a little bit of baking soda, dip the brush into water, then into the baking soda. Just a little bit (seriously little) of the soda onto the brush, if you get too much rap the toothbrush against the container to knock off the excess. Brush as normal, you won't like the taste but in a 7-10 days it becomes tolerable. Your saliva is naturally somewhat acidic (which the mouth bacteria like) but the baking soda is basic and in one to two minutes the "Ph change" will kill most of the bacteria. They'll never be able to adapt to this condition. Floss your teeth after brushing, if you can purchase a "floss fork" this makes the flossing faster and easier. Spit and rinse your mouth with water, you don't need to keep it in your mouth any longer. Finish up by brushing again with a toothpaste that tastes good. Just a little bit of the soda, if you can taste it, then you've got enough on your brush. Try to brush 4 times a day, after each meal and before retiring.

I've been using a combination of salt and baking soda for a few years. My teeth are whiter and my gums feel a lot healthier.

I've been using baking soda to brush my teeth since childhood because we couldn't always afford toothpaste. While baking soda cleans, (I use it regularly), it doesn't have whitening effects like coconut oil after just a few uses.

Coconut oil is not healthy to eat. I only use it on my hair and skin.

[usatoday.com]

New research says what we used to believe about saturated fats are wrong. As science progresses, we are discovering that old wives tales aren't prominent today. Look up on You Tube: Coconut Oil 7 Reasons to Take Two Tablespoons Per Day. Studies have shown that people who use it daily like in Polynesian countries don't get heart disease like Western countries, it is touted as the new Superfood.

Coconut oil has many uses I think it's also a natural antibiotic. I use it a lot for skin care and my dog as well. If you are into natural oils look into neem oil. It is great stuff, neem is considered nature's pharmacy. I found my dog as a stray and rescued her she had mange in a few spots, vet said the chemical treatment was the only was to rid it and being on her head they said there was a chance the dip could kill her. I did some research that day and saw neem oil cured mange, I mixed it 50/50 with coconut to thin it and warmed it in hot water then shook it up to blend. The coconut oil help it absorb into her skin better within 2-3 week completely gone only cost about $15 for both oils and have plenty left, better than the couple hundred and health risk to my dog.

I did it for several weeks a few years ago but didn't see results of any kind. Twenty minutes is a long time to swish oil around your mouth with no apparent benefits! I may try it again one day since I still have plenty of coconut oil. I can't cook with the unrefined stuff since it makes everything taste like coconut. If someone wants to try oil pulling though, they should be warned to spit the oil out into the trash can or else it will gunk up their plumbing! Please keep us posted on your results. ?

Okay, that sounds interesting. I'll have to try it out..sometime. I'm not a fan of cocconut oil in general. Tried in cooking and didn't care for the taste.
