I was listening to Dr. Cornel West the other day. As a foreigner to the US I wasn’t that familiar with him. He is amazing! I was thinking - “What a speaker, and what an ethical, humanistic person he is.” Alas - I quickly realized he is a Christian! How can such a brilliant thinker believe in a deity? I have seen this before. Even in fields like astronomy and physics, brilliant academics having faith in a “ fairy cloud dad” and a book full of conflicting and archaic nonsense. What do you think is happening there?

He's been on Bill Maher several times (Bill Maher is an atheist), and they've discussed that. The Jesus of Matthew five through eight is one of the most profound people ever created, and if you look carefully at the "Sermon on the Mount," you'll find it's simply brilliant. Even Bill Maher likes this Jesus. I do too. And this is the Jesus that Dr. Cornel espouses. I've spent most of my life trying to live "up" to the ideology of this Jesus.

But there's a huge difference between Jesus, and Christ. Most Christians follow Christ, the antithesis of Jesus.

There are a few Christians who use their religious beliefs as "floor values" providing a safe base from which to learn, grow, and help. Unfortunately, too many Christians use their religious believes as "ceiling values" -- as a limit to learning, growth and community, concentrating on the"thou shalt nots."

There are Christians (and others) whose faith is in the principles; not in a literal interpretation of the mythology. Do you know anything about the specifics of Dr. West’s faith? I don’t know specifically, but my guess is he doesn’t believe in the god of the literalist.

It's simple, really. He's nowhere near brilliant nor an ethical humanist. He's a batshit crazy fucker. There aren't many believers in the fields of cosmology or physics.

I am new to the USA and it’s public figures. Dr. West, has a Ph.D in Philosophy from Princeton, and is a Harvard graduate. That’s quite brilliant in itself, compared with most educated people. He seemed very together and coherent on the radio the other day. What has done to make you think he is insane?

I think, no matter how cleaver some people are they have been so conditioned by their upbringing that they cannot get away from it + some people just have a need to believe that there must be something like a God or would we be here. Unfortunately it is so.
