I sometimes feel awkward when people sneeze because the typical social expectation is to say "Bless you."

Either I say:
A) Nothing. ?
B) "Excuse you."
C) "Bless you." (Because I don't feel like dealing with awkwardness.)

How do YOU react when someone sneezes?

I still say bless you. Sometimes salud. I sneeze every day and I get a lot of bless yous from other so I guess I just want to return the favor. But it does make me wonder about the origin. I think it has something to do with the believe that your heart skips a beat when you sneeze.

I say bless you. I just look at it as a nice thing to say after someone sneezes.

What people usually say to me is "You sneeze like a cat".

i'm quite familiar with that awkward feeling & still getting used to just not react at all. sometimes i might revert to my first language german & say "gesundheit!"

Blesser in French means to hurt, and 48% of the English Lexicon is French, and it is customary to hit somone on the back after an during sneezes.

Not sure if you're trying to pull my leg. Where is it customary to hit someone on their back when they sneeze?

@mrnatureboy
Do dr. Not hit babies to start the act of breathing?

@Etre Yes, but that isn't while they're sneezing.

@mrnatureboy
Seen it several times and committed the act myself, when successive sneezes occur, in frienship and love trying to jolt the senses back. You have never patted somone on the back when caughing? It happens with sneezes to, kind love.

You can do as the Germans (gesundheit) or the Hungarians (egeszsegedre) do. And say, “To your good health”

I've used "gesundheit" a few times. The Hungarian one is new to me and I'm pretty sure using it will make people think I'm odd (more than usual, that is). In any case, you made me realize that--since I'm studying Spanish--I could say "salud".

Good question. I hate that now too. Being raise to say it and saying it for so long; its hard to break the habit. I want A.

I agree. It sucks that it's the norm. Most of the time I just ignore it. It's totally meaningless, not like it cures them.
