In case some of you more woodsy people wonder how I knew what gender these animals are..I checked their tracks in the snow or mud the next day.
Female mammals have wider pelvises, so their back foot prints overstep the front foot prints slightly to the outside, while males have wider shoulders, so their hind foot prints step slightly to the inside of the front prints.
Once I knew what the animals looked like, I could ID their genders just from trail cam photos, when the ground was dry.
Awesome job and ow fun too.
Thanks! Nothing much more fun than a long drive in the country behind a Walking Horse. I used to ride them without using the bridle reins, just thinking to them what to do, and I did the same while driving.
I could even imagine which gait I wanted them to use; racking, running walk, trot, pace, etc., and as I thought it, the horses would do it. Very convenient.
@birdingnut Interesting you would mention that one. It is my favorite of them all, I love the perspective.
