Too bad (many) humans have such a hard time using such simple logic.
Barnie2years comments on Jan 10, 2019:
That would be wonderful if humans, like trees, followed the simple rules of nature. But humans are self determined. They choose to be nice, they choose to be mean, they choose to subjugate other humans, they choose to kill for no reason. No tree has ever said “I don’t like this house next to me, I think I will drop my biggest branch on its roof!” A human will say “I’m tired of raking leaves every fall, I will cut down that perfectly healthy tree!” The difference between accepting nature and free will.

Dealing with grief
Barnie2years comments on Dec 30, 2018:
Everyone deals with grief in their own way, regardless of what you believe in or don't believe. I know people who on the loss of a family member, are inconsolable and never fully recover, and yet spout the "better place, will see them in heaven, they are with other family members" mantra, while obviously not fully believing it. I don't believe I will ever see my dad, grandparents, first born child or any one else that dies again. I can tell you, my way of dealing with grief is the remember the good things that person accomplished in life, the happy times we may have had, the less than wonderful times as well. In the case of my infant son, that good time was only less than a year, but he had cancer, so his last 6 months of suffering made his death seem like a release from that. I find that rather than mourn their death, I prefer to celebrate their life and keep their memories alive without condemning myself to misery. Life is precious and short and should be lived while you are alive. Long term grief is not honoring those who pass, but killing your own life instead. Just how I handle it. As I said at the beginning, everyone deals with death on their own way.

Is it possible to fall in love with someone with opposing political views?
Barnie2years comments on Dec 30, 2018:
It's possible to fall in love with anyone. Can it be sustained if there is stark differences in religious, political, cultura, agel or language differences? I have seen relationships work with these differences, but it takes a lot of give and take, understanding and acceptance to overlook these chasms. In other words, both people have to be equally in love with each other and able to find commonalities in other areas as well as joy in each other's company. I would say that your starting the relationship with a handicap and that few can survive, but it's not impossible. One need look no further than Kellyanne Conway, Trump's most loyal supporter and her husband, who lambasts Trump on social media on a regular basis.

I worked in public transit as a driver for 42 years. Rarely took a day off sick. If I felt something coming on (stuffy nose, sore throat) this is what took care of it. It will not lessen the symptoms, there are plenty of OTC remedies for that. But I never had the flu/cold for more than a few days. For sore throat, take Zink Lozengers. Not the candy coated variety found in drug stores. Thy GNC or other vitamine shops. For the rest: 8 to 10 grams of vitamine C a day. I used to take half in the morning, half in the evening. As symptoms ease, tapper off, but continue taking until you’re pretty much back to 100%. I made the mistake of stopping to quick a few times and had to start over. That’s it, unless you have allergies or issues with vitamine C. But this has worked for a lot of friends that tried it as well.

If you are in the path of the tornado, your house disappears, if outside the path, it doesn’t. God didn’t have anything to do with it.

I DO celebrate Christmas, but as a celebration of light and family warmth and feeling in Winter.
Barnie2years comments on Dec 10, 2018:
Over the years I have had some VERY bad Christmas seasons. I also find the greed and obsession of spending money people can’t afford on things people don’t really need disturbing. My immediate family (mom, my sister and her husband) gets together every year for Christmas for a week or so. We visit remaining family in the area, an ever smaller number. My son and his family live nearby as well (two grandsons), so we generally do the traditional gift exchange with them. The past few years, instead of gifts for the adults, who need nothing, I donate money to various charities that I feel they would value. Buy the grandsons some little gifts but mostly put money into education funds for both of them all year, something that will be of far more value than any toy they will break or discard in a week or two. I don’t decorate, leaving that job to my sister and her husband, who seem to enjoy the activity, once they get here. All I have to do is take it down and store it for next year after they leave!

How many of you attend services, but are agnostic?
Barnie2years comments on Dec 5, 2018:
I used to go with mom when visiting my parents in Florida. But at some point I found it too hard not to laugh out loud at the rituals and sermons. The last time I was in that church was for my father’s funeral three years ago. I was the primary speaker, it was just a small gathering of friends of theirs, and my eulogy had no mention of god. Though we rarely talked religion (even less politics), the conversations we did have led me to believe that Dad was more Agnostic than a believer. Much of his infrequent going to church was more to make Mom happy than to support his beliefs. We had two other memorial services in various locations they had lived, none of them held in a church setting. The only other church visits in recent years have been for the baptism of my grandsons and in support of my son and his family who are believers. What I find every time I do attend a service is the complete ridiculousness of what they are promoting. The total unbelievability of the book they promote as world history. The hypocrisy of what they preach and how they actually function! So the best thing for me is to just stay away from the temptation to get into arguments with people I love.

Some people are just born into a lucky life while others aren’t? True or false?
Barnie2years comments on Nov 24, 2018:
Call it luck, circumstance, fortune or the Lord's blessings. There is no way to deny that everyone is born into a world different from each other. From the color of your skin, the country you are born in, the health of your genetic clan, the relationship of you parents, the financial status of your family. All of these determine much of what happens in the early years of your life. They may not be the only determining factor on how you advance through that life, but they certainly have bearing on how you move forward. But it doesn't end at birth of course. Life is a series of changes as we grow that can affect your psyche. Family divorce, death, loss of employment, moving, personality disorders, bullies, pedophiles and numerous medical issues continue to affect how and how well we develop. Some personalities deal well with certain hardships, some personalities deal badly with the best of situations. Overcoming the highs and lows of life is not something everyone is good at. And they cannot often be controlled but only dealt with. I consider myself very lucky! I had a hard working, successful, loving father, a wonderful caring mother, a great extended family, loving grandparents, aunts and uncles. My father's job took us to Europe for almost ten years, moving every two or three. Would my life had been totally different if we had stayed in Lancaster, PA for my entire life? Dad could have had a good job at the home company, or perhaps gotten work with other companies and stayed in one place. Of course! Better or worse? Who knows, there is no way to change our past or know how it would have turned out. There are others who are born without any of these things, single mother, large family with little income, broken family ties, foster homes, orphans. While they are certainly unlucky in their birth right, many manage to overcome these obstacles and lead very successful lives, but they have to work a lot harder at it. And many never are able to overcome those obstacles and flounder, get more adverse situations thrown at them and never recover. Medical issues, financial setbacks, not caused by anything they themselves did are certainly bad luck. Of course many people create their own destiny and call it luck or bad luck. If you go in and smack your boss in the face, it isn't bad luck that you lost your job. If you work your ass off and make a lot of money, it isn't good luck, though being in the circumstances that allowed you to do either of those things could be considered luck.

My last wife and I hosted holidays during the time we were married, with my son and his family. I did spend several holidays alone and was not fond of it. It isn’t the holiday that I care about, but I love family time, even the extended family. I have never been able to understand disfunctional famlies. Zoos & Aquariums: Getting in Touch with Nature through Others' Captivity - TheHumanist.com
Barnie2years comments on Nov 22, 2018:
I disagree with this on so many levels. Are there “zoos” out there that abuse their animals? Of course, just as there are sweatshops that abuse their employees. The bigger zoos have become much more conscious of animal welfare and mental health. As for educational, without zoos the vast majority of people would have no way to observe any animals beyond dogs and cats. And be aware that without zoo programs there would be many animal species completely extinct. Zoo breeding programs and rescue divisions work around the world to protect and develop local animal preservation organizations. So, while I would agree that anything calling itself a zoo without animal welfare protocols to protect the animals should be shut down, respectable, science based zoos have a legitimate and very important purpose.

When I lived in Europe in the 60’s and 70’s hitchhiking was a way of life. Car ownership was not as common and gas was very expensive. I like the idea of the E-pouce! Bringing hitchhiking into the 21st century.
Having an ice storm here in Ohio...it definitely makes everything beautiful though

It’s beautiful on the trees and bushes, but rough on the roads and can do a lot of damage. We had an early season one a couple of years ago when the trees still had most their leaves on. It wasn’t safe to be outside, huge branches were breaking off trees everywhere. I didn’t have electricity for five days!
So I'm watching this nature show about squirrels.
Barnie2years comments on Nov 15, 2018:
The little buggers are extremely intelligent. There was a two show series on them I watched one time where they set up obstacle course for them to get through to food. Each time they would solve a part of the course, the next time through, they would remember how they did it and go right to the next one. I have a "squirrel proof" feeder out front and one day there was a squirrel eating out of it. I made a bunch of noise and he dropped of, but minutes later he was up again. So the next time I chased him down I waited to see how he did it. I would not have believed it if I hadn't been watching.
A little brightness for those of us on the east coast of the US.

Ad-libbing while cooking. What ad-libs worked for you?
Barnie2years comments on Nov 15, 2018:
I don’t bake. Try to limit carbs, so I don’t keep cookies, cake, pies or other baked goods in the house. If I get desperate I will get something when I eat out. But even then, it’s rare.
Hahahaha ??????

I woke up to our first snow.
Barnie2years comments on Nov 14, 2018:
My township vacuums up leaves curbside from October to mid November. Usually, it works out fine. But one year, the week before the last pickup, we had a heavy snowfall. When the plows came through, they pushed piles of snow on to the piles of leaves. And then it never melted off. In fact we had weekly snow falls accumulating on what was already there. The township had to make a leaf run in April when they finally got melted out of the snow. What a mess! Lawns were messed up not only because of leaves, but the snow cut off their sunlight too. Welcome to the northern states!

I kind of had that when I was working, though I rarely went to bet before 11:30 and often had to be at work at 5:30 or 6:00. But weekends were for catching up on sleep lost during the week.

My family moved to Lyon France when I was 10 years old, halfway through second grade. We lived in Lyon for three years, then moved to Geneva, Switzerland, two houses in two years, then to Brussels, Belgium, where we lived until 1969. In between, I was in Valley Forge Military academy for my ninth grade school year, and finished high school, 11th and 12th grades, in Lancaster, PA, where we started from. With moving ever couple of year to a different country, and the friends I made in the American Schools over there were constantly moving, I learned to make friends quickly, and get over them just as quickly. You also learned not to depend much on others, since you don't know them all that well in such short periods of time. So I am a loner. I have many acquaintances, pretty much no really close friends. I've been married three times and blame at least some of that on not knowing how to deal with people on a long term basis. I am not unfriendly, quite the contrary. I smile and say hello to strangers I meet when walking my dog, stop and talk to neighbors when they are outside, and help anyone who asks. What I don't do is join groups, in fact since retiring from bus driving, I avoid groups as much as possible. For 42 years I had to be nice and put up with people talking to me or at me on the bus and be pleasant no matter how I felt or who they were. And in general, I liked my passengers, but I didn't get to choose which ones I dealt with. No, I can choose! Well, sort of. My mom moved up to Lancaster two years ago and she is not a great socializer either, so when she has nothing going on at her "village", she comes over and hangs out with me, or wants me to come over there. I left home when I was 17 and have never been back, and I am quite comfortable being alone. My house is usually quiet, I don't need a radio or the TV on 24 hours a day like mom and my sister do. I actually spend most of my time on Facebook or on this site, my major form of communication, since I control how much time I spend doing it and what conversations I become involved with. I thought that finding a wife would provide me with that "best friend" I had always wanted, but that never worked out quite the way I hoped. So, I go into my twilight years by myself most of the time and not feeling terrible about it, just a bit disappointed that the one thing I wanted most, intimacy, will forever elude me. But I have my pup, live in a great house, feed myself well and get around with not problems. That puts me ahead of a great number of people my age. And when I see some of the people I know and their constant bickering and complaining, I often feel maybe I am better off being alone and self sufficient.

Sadly true. Just a look at the highest rated reality shows on TV (Big Brother, Survivor, The Bachelor/Bachlorette), You Tube, our current president who also had a “reality” show. Even so many of the movies made today are simple minded. I will never forget when my step-son was around nine or ten, and had been separated from me for about five years, he thought professional wrestling was real. The guy my ex was living with was a moron! ? It took a few years back together to get him straightened out!

My mom hand knitted most of the stockings I hang every year. Since my family gathers at my house every Christmas, they will remain here until I am no longer in this house. Even though I am not a Christmas fan (too many bad events in my life happened around Christmas time), my sister, now with the help of her husband decorate when they get here. So I can still enjoy the happier memories.

Does not raking leaves kill the grass?
Barnie2years comments on Nov 9, 2018:
If they are thick enough it cuts off air and will turn the grass brown. And if you get a layer of snow on top of that yet, you will not have a pretty yard in the spring. Also, if you have a wet winter it can develop mold and screw up your lawn. If you are not going to take them off, at least mulch them with the lawnmower. That is what our township suggested.
Well that's my work's xmas party sorted..in Dublin. Woo hoo! ☃️☃️☃️?

Took a tour of Ireland a few years ago (I think 2009). Spent almost three days in Dublin. Had a great meal at a little pub out of the tourist district, not unreasonably priced. Did quite a bit of walking about. Lovely along the river and the historic district. I was fortunate to have lovely weather, in fact for almost the whole trip we had very little rain.

Well said. The only positive from last night was progressives and non old white men got a foot in the door! Two Muslim women were elected, a Native American, I believe at least two LGBTQ candidates took offices, as Colorado governor and I believe a representative. Pennsylvania sent more women to Congress than ever before. Progressives won seats in New York. So, while I am disappointed we could not get the senate from the reTuglicans, we got one branch. This is not going to help us avoid probably at least one more Trump appointed Supreme Court Justice. And McConnell has already announced that they are going to be rubber stamping conservative justice appointments throughout the system. So matter what we do in the next general election, the courts will lean white conservative for decades to come. His holding out appointments during the entire Obama administration is paying off big time!
