This morning I woke and sleepily, deliciously stretched. Ow! A painful Charlie horse seized my calf muscle. Typical.
Scrambling madly out of bed in pain, I leaned against a windowsill, deeply stretching the offending muscle. The cramp abated. But the muscle was sore afterward.
For the past five years, muscle cramps have plagued me, especially while hiking when I hammer my leg muscles. Also, got horrible foot cramps while swimming laps and driving.
Drinking Emergen-C electrolyte replacement powder in water immediately stops my muscle cramps. So, I carry Emergen-C packets in my car and pack.
Magnesium and calcium supplements taken morning and night decreased my muscle cramps by 95%. Drinking lots of water helps. Two years ago, I realized I wasn't eating enough salt. Salting my food at the table helped, too.
Unfortunately, muscle cramps increase as we get older.
What works for you?
I don't add salt to anything , ever , and am not allowed to eat prepared foods because of the salt in them , but I do eat both potatoes and bananas a lot . Very , very seldom have any cramps .
Everyone is different.
I find that just hydration with water seems sufficient. And working the muscle.
I let them win... I drop like a Baby when I pull a muscle... since my basketball days half a century ago.
While hiking, as I leaped across a stream, I collapsed on the muddy, steep bank, felled by a severe Charley horse.
Karen ran to help me up. Quickly mixed Emergen-C in water and drank it. Bingo! The Charley horse abated as I stretched the calf.
@LiterateHiker Since youth the meat of my calf can change shape and go flat... Scary... worse happening now while I am sleeping and I stretch without noticing and Bang!!! A moment like that I can strangle jesus and some of the apostles before being stopped.
Years ago Annette had reoccurring muscle cramps in her calf. She could not walk 100 yards without the calf cramping. She went to numerous doctors but nothing they prescribed worked. Finally a friend said "salt" you're missing salt. As she made all food from scratch and rarely added salt to her food she was missing salt. Within 2 days the problem abated. She salted her food from then on. Just a maybe, are you not getting enough salt?
You're right.
In my early 20's, I began a low-salt diet. At that time, birth control pills were much stronger and caused bloating. Also, I never eat chips. So, I got used to a low-salt diet.
Two years ago, I began salting my food at the table. This helped tremendously with muscle cramps.
A good thought. thanks
in the calf: flex! your natural instinct is to point the toe. don't! do the opposite. flex the toe back up. the cramp will resolve.
in the thigh, where i also get them: i don't know and it's making me nuts.
i have tried so many kinds of dietary adjustments and nothing works for me to prevent the cramps. nothing. i am still eating lots of bananas and potatoes to no avail. as for salt, my blood pressure says no to that. i do anyway. i guzzle water all day long. nothing helps.

You have my sympathy. Like you, I guzzle water all day long.
The husband of my hiking partner Gro gets severe muscle cramps, especially at night. He has been to many medical doctors and specialists. Nothing he tried works.
Unfortunately, muscle cramps increase as we get older. Everyone is different. What works for one person doesn't help the next.
@LiterateHiker so it is with so many things, eh? but while we may not be able to prevent the cramps entirely, the toe-flexing really should put a stop to one in progress pretty fast. the trick is remembering to do it when you're in pain!

Making sure to consume enough salt and magnesium. I get maybe 2 or 3 a year, if that.
