Should Prostitution be Legal?

I feel that our society's disdain of prostitution is derived from irrational religious morality so I'm curious to learn what you heavens think about this topic.

Here's what I think-
The exchange of sexual services for money between consenting adults is not immoral and should not be illegal. Porn actors are paid to have sex and that is legal but if a sex worker is paid to have sex he/she has committed a crime. How does that make sense?

Legal prostitution is safer/healthier because it can be regulated and is not pushed into back alleys and seedy places. Currently, prostitutes work under the thumb of often brutal and manipulative pimps who take advantage of them. They can not go to the police for help so they must rely on a pimp for protection. If it were legal, they would work in regulated brothels and would be protected by the law rather than persecuted by it. They would also be tested regularly for std's which would help control the spread of disease.

Regardless of how you feel about prostitution personally, the freedom of others to make their own life decisions should not be infringed upon if those choices do not cause harm to others.

Prostitution is as old as civilization itself. People always have and always will exchange things for sexual services and attempting to end it is folly. The prohibition of it causes much more harm than prostitution itself.

Prostitution prohibition is a result of a paranoid society sexually repressed by irrational religious beliefs. I see no detriment to allowing prostitution to operate freely and in fact I think it can be beneficial for people to have the choice of gaining sexual release without a need for commitment to a relationship. There have been lots of societies throughout history that allowed and even encouraged it without issue.

Legalize it completely, but it also needs to be closely regulated to prevent trafficking, exploitation, abuse, and spread of STDs. Like weed, it would be a huge tax boon to the government, but the reasoning behind both of them remaining illegal is the moral opposition of the religious.

Legalize it.

As a survivor of human trafficking, absolutely not. I’ve been beaten, robbed, held in cars, woken up to being smacked in the face for falling asleep, and I’ve had a anally raped with a broomstick!! If you want a crazier story than mine, look up my late Survivor Sister, Jennifer Kempton, she was prostituted and was vaginally raped with a knife!

So... no! It should never be legalized and trucks should be imprisoned forever!

Wow, that's horrible! I'm sorry you and others had to endure such evil treatment. I hope the people responsible were caught and punished appropriately.

The point I would like to make is that, the crimes which you have described, trafficking, robbery, beating, rape... would all still be illegal under a legalized system of prostitution. In fact, prostitutes who are being treated that way would have a better chance at getting out of that situation because their profession would be legal so they would be able to seek help from the authorities.

Currently, prostitutes work outside the boundaries of the law so they are unable to go to the police for help if they are abused. The police persecute them as criminals rather than help those who are victims.

Sex workers have more power and protection under a legal and regulated system. They would also be entitled to the benefits associated with legitimate work like social security, minimum wage, and worker safety protections.

I get that your experience was extremely traumatic and I thank you for expressing and sharing it with us.

You are talking about woman trafficking and forced assault? Isn't it different from voluntary sex trade? Do we have to go to the extremes as the norm?

@St-Sinner I firmly believe as well as over 25 other human trafficking and prostitution survivors, even if they say they’re willing participants, they’re lying... I know women from Detroit that will flat out tell you, “Yeah, I was a hoe!” And now she’s the founder of a safe house and anti prostitution organization. You sell a piece of your soul with every trick... no one “loves” that “job”. It’s beyond terrifying, I’ve never met a girl who is voluntarily doing it. And especially right now, the economy is the Pimp!

@TattedIrishXx
I met an escort girl in New York years ago who said she would rather do that than being a secretary, pushing papers and getting meagrely paid.

People have tons of different viewpoints on every issue.

@TattedIrishXx

(logically)
It would only take one person to falsify the statement :
no one “loves” that “job”. Has anyone taken a large 'population' poll ?

I think there is no shortage of folks who never love their job(s).
