Religious people tend to begin with their conclusions, then work backwards looking for arguments that appear to support those conclusions, while ignoring anything that doesn't. They also excel at inventing supernatural arguments out of thin air to make inconvenient facts go away.

Alas, another foray into the world of generalizations.....

...and thus spoke the non- lord, and the faithless lined up to pile on....

Maybe a better way of making the point might have been to avoid personalization? Something like:
Religious thinking generally involves adopting conclusions that require the believer to retroactively search for supporting arguments, while ignoring evidence to the contrary. This type of thinking excels at inventing supernatural explanations to rationalize a belief in the face of inconvenient facts.

Better?

@p-nullifidian better, though In the first section you could could substitute “religious thinking” with any other group and it could apply

I think very few Christians believe the bible is factually true. Most modern Cristians accept that the old testament is collection of tribal myths. It is pointless to argue against modern Christianity by saying they are wrong because the ark was not big enough, that the time scale of the old testament is wrong, that Methusalah lived 900 years. In the UK very few people indeed believe in the old testament. We are just putting up a spurious argument when we tell they are wrong because they believe in these things. Most of them don't.

Really perhaps our arguments should be based on the actual harm that religion has done to society.

Remember it does have a social function. The 'need' to believe in a common philosophy seems to have had a survival advantage in bonding and cohesion in primitive societies.

You nailed it

Of all the spheres of human thought, religion is the only one which does not require any justification of ideas, evidence, logic, or even majority opinion. So it is the only one, which will support anything however silly. I think that is why it is so popular.

Christian, Hindu or Muslim? Catholic or Protestant? Shia or Sunni? Church of England, Baptist or Mor(m)on? Voodoo or Pastafarian?

@anglophone Quite.

@anglophone all of the above,duuuuhhhhhhh

Leftists tend to begin with their conclusions, then work backwards looking for arguments that appear to support those conclusions.

Rightist tend to spew crap based upon hate, fear, and supernatural.

I agree with BOTH @PBuck0145 and @xenview because BOTH the Left and the Right have sunk to not much more than propaganda.

So now the discussion has turned political. OK, how do you explain those people who want the best of everything for people regardless of their skin color and nationality?You could remain stupid and declare that America was never a multi-cultural nation.

@PBuck0145
So says the man starting with a conclusion and then making shit up to support it?

@LenHazell53 Exactly like the main post.

That's why I always poke fun at them. Funnily enough, that always seems to upset them.

Well, they're delusional, so...

Yup!

Oh yeah, Ken Ham and his idea that humans lived with Dinosaurs, what a frigging joke.
Imagine Ogg the Neanderthal man armed with primitive stone ax taking on something with the armour like plates of a Steg or the speed and sharp claws of Raptor or a very hungry T-Rex ?
Poor old Ogg would've shit himself so much that just single step and he'd be a canape for the T-Rex, an appetiser for the Raptor or a ' tail ornamen t' for the Steg at the very least.
Such a pity for Ken Ham (NOT) that roughly 65 MILLION Years separate Modern Humans from the Dinosaurs.
A darn shame that "Jurassic Park" was just fiction, otherwise we could get Ken Ham to demonstrate LIVE on World-wide Television how Noah managed to live, build the Ark and carry dinosaurs on something smaller than the RMS Titanic or even how humans could hunt dinosaurs and survive to eat them rather than end up Dino-turds or human toe-jam on the foot of a Brachiosaur.
I, for one, would pay money to see him do that.

Did God put Ken Ham on this earth for the amusement of atheists?

@anglophone Why yes he did.

@anglophone Nah, It's an even money bet that the reason Ken Ham is here today, well in Kenturkey at least thankfully, is because his father was watching as the wife of his next door neighbour was sunbathing, got horny, squirted against the fence and what was left hanging was hatched out by the sun....LOL.
