LINK Judge: Texas Gov. Cannot Block Atheist Holiday Display in State Capitol | Hemant Mehta | Friendly Atheist | Patheos

In 2018 the Freedom From Religion Foundation won a major lawsuit against the state of Texas. Yesterday they did it again.

Because there was a nativity scene in the Texas State Capitol in 2015, FFRF applied to put up their own display. It was a "secular Nativity" featuring the Bill of Rights, three Founding Fathers, and the Statue of Liberty. There was also a sign that wished everyone a "Happy Winter Solstice."

unfortunately, Governor Greg Abbot demanded it be removed.

Brave! Bravo! Amazed that a Texas judge would make the ruling, as it pretty much amounts to political suicide.

The fact that it was a unanimous decision says that the courts are NOT going to allow the Constitution to be trod on by religious zealots who only care about "power" ... Now if they can just find a way get control of these QANON slimes that are attempting to overthrow the country.

@phoenixone1 CURRENT judges, yes. But one has to wonder what the future holds, because judges are either elected or appointed, both of which can result in there being biased judges in place who will choose to interpret law other than was intended when the laws were passed. And in red states, they are already enacting laws designed to bias the vote, and consequently electees and appointments.

@MsKathleen time will tell but they all know where the dividing line is between Church and State...if it is crossed then it will, I believe, be challenged..."VIGOROUSLY"

@phoenixone1 If the Republicans successfully accomplish voter suppression, they will both appoint and elect judges who will rule the way they want, IN SPITE OF THE LAW. Laws have not stopped them to date.

@MsKathleen I can understand your fear but voter suppression unfortunately appears as a "grey area" for the Courts...Church/State is fortunately more clearly defined. It's always been a bloody see-saw with Voter suppression and black and poor have always come out on the high side of the ride because they lacked the numbers. That is changing fortunately. The GOP is trying to put a stranglehold on State and Federal Government...they had their asses handed to them in 2020 and if we play by their rules in 2022 and 2024 we can STILL BEAT THEM if EVERYONE gets out and VOTES...let them have their stupid rules...JUST SHOW UP AND VOTE...they are OUTNUMBERED and they know it and they are SCARED...GOOD...they should be scared...

No matter how many times these Xian asshats are told religious freedom applies to every religion, they always get offended if anyone puts up anything that isn't specifically Xian based as if it's the first time they'd heard it.

How about a display of Greek gods, the Roman gods and the Nordic gods? That might give Governor Greg Abbott an aneurysm in the brain (always assuming that he has a brain, which I wonder about).

We have been fighting this religious jerk for years and I'll bet he tries to remove it again. Funny it isn't overtly atheist.
To all those considering moving to Texass be warned.

Texas will only become "purple" if LIBERALS/progressives move there. The problem is the weather.
