A majority of Americans in a new poll have a positive association with the term “woke,” understanding it to mean “to be informed, educated on, and aware of social injustices.”
The USA Today-Ipsos poll released on Wednesday found that 56 percent agreed with the more positive definition, while 39 percent had a negative association with the word and understood it to mean “to be overly politically correct and police others’ words.”
However, Americans in the poll are divided on whether they consider it an insult to be described as “woke,” with 40 percent calling it an insult and 32 percent calling it a compliment.
Both of these measures break down along party lines, with Republicans more likely than their Democratic counterparts to have a negative understanding of “wokeness” and to consider it an insult.
While 56 percent of Republicans said “wokeness” meant being overly politically correct, 78 percent of Democrats understood the term as being informed on social justice issues.
When asked how they would respond if someone called them “woke,” 60 percent of Republicans said they would consider it to be an insult, while 46 percent of Democrats said they would describe it as a compliment.
The discussion around the term comes as GOP politicians wage a so-called war on “wokeness.” Leading the charge, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis 
has previously declared that the Sunshine State is “where woke goes to die.”
“We fight the woke in the legislature. We fight the woke in the schools. We fight the woke in the corporations. We will never, ever surrender to the woke mob,” DeSantis said after securing his second term as governor in November.
The USA Today-Ipsos poll was conducted March 3-5 with 1,023 adults and had a margin of error of 3.3 percentage points.

Sadly, because we're all human, it means both. For a time, until a corrective action takes place, being overly attentive to an idea can become draconian to established cliche's and communication. Cautioning children to move cautiously, so as not to incur an injury costly to parent's budget, will likely be laughed at when the parents are thought out of ear range. It would seem compassionate for Left to be more cautious about going too far but we just become more insistent (which is demonstrated by the high figure of 78%) on the logical progression of our new understandings. At some point nodding, smiling wryly, and not voicing the thought 'You continue to miss my logic' is the better strategy. They might get the logic later, while trying to fall asleep.

That means 54% either think it an insult or have no opinion. That's pretty close to 60% but 46% complimentary seems like a better offset. Even many liberals are put off by being told they can no longer engage human behaviors (i.e., looking at someone's legs/pecs/glands or other body parts for a moment without getting scorned and ostracized).
I think we can all do better and should try to. That does not mean, to me, that we should accept any objection to progress which increases inclusiveness. This is what humor purportedly does.

Conservatives would back the term "woke" had it not been originally coined by civil rights workers, racist hate anything to do with civil rights.

I think they chose "woke" because it was originally slang from black culture. By being against wokeness, it is a dog whistle strategy to stir up the racists and show that they are with the racists without overtly saying that people of color should "stay in their place."
@snytiger6 Exactly, and when they don't think they're talking to racist then they accuse the same people they call woke of being socialist, and if they think their audience isn't racist or old McCarthy political anti-communist then they call the same people groomers.
The hate never ends, but to be clear they are fundamentally against all people having equal rights under the law.
I keep saying that the United States needs to legislate laws that criminalize slavery, but they won't.
Why?
Because they use prisoners for slave labor, if they made it illegal then private prisons would be shut down, as they should be.
