we buried penny in the back yard today, up close to the house. (she died early sunday morning, just after midnight, but it's been raining on and off since then.) we had to move some decrepit wooden boxes i had been trying to turn into raised flower beds, and it rained (again!) on us to the point that we had to stop midway, but it got sunny then and we went back out and finished digging. i buried some dried flowers with her (no coffin, just an old towel covering her), planted gladiolus bulbs a couple layers of dirt above her, and sprinkled impatiens seeds over the fresh dirt atop the grave. we put some stones down -- jewish tradition (instead of flowers). i cried. richard held me. she's really gone. i loved that cat and she loved me. there is a hole in my heart. but she'll bloom....

Kate had Poulet for over 16 years and when she passed she told me she never wanted another cat. She said, "It just hurts too much when they die." One month later we went to the humane society and looked at cats, Kate had one picked out from looking in the paper. We wanted another so we looked for quite a time. FInally it came down to two. When Late asked me how we would choose between them I said something like why choose take all three. So we did. After some time she found a cat in the neighborhood and finally brought it into the house. Sixty four days later Chutney gave birth to four kittens. She planned to give them away, but I knew we had four more. One of the kittens did not make it and the other three just grew and grew, We thought there were problems as they just got bigger and bigger. Finally we figured out that we were the proud grandparents of three Maine Coons. Great animals, the loves of our lives. It has been some time since the last passed after eighteen years with us. We now have six, Jack, so names so we could tell people we know Jack, he is the oldest, Next is Lilly who picked us when we were at the vet taking care of Phillup, one of the Maine Coons. She is allowing me to sit in her chair as I type this. From the local Humane Society we have gotten, Snoopy, who has to know what is happening all the time, Tigger, Snoopy's buddy (bonded pair) from the Society. Mattie, a blue russian, who will not let an evening go without making sure I am settled in bed and have a friend to pet. Lastly Baxter is the youngest and brings energy to the group, he has taught us all to play and chase things. I love every one of these creatures who has shared their lives with us, they have given so much and asked for so little. May many more come to us.

beautiful, and reminiscent of how cats have come to us, too. we are cat people!

I always cry when someone's pet dies, even if I didn't know them, but for a human, I don't cry. I'm just made that way. Sorry for your loss, I'm crying with you.

Sorry to hear of your loss. We too once had a loved cat that died from feline leukemia. We also buried him (Spike) in the back yard with a heart shaped piece of ceramic my then partner made.

That's a beautiful tradition.

I just put Maev's cremains in the backyard this spring. So I had a taste of what you felt again.

Be extra kind to yourself. The grief is real.
They're family members who never hurt your feelings deliberately and who bring great joy while they're here.

So sorry, but you did a very kind thing for her....hugs and <3

i feel as if i let her down, which is ridiculous because even if i were a doctor i couldn't have cured her cancer. but i hope i did my best.

I grieved for over a year when our previous cat died... the best way for me to get past the grief was 2 little black rescue kittens (brothers). They're now 6 years old... they can't replace our old cat. But the "cat" presence in our house is a great comfort.

we still have penny's husband tevye and two of their daughters, wendy and kuma, all old, and our little dog, ramona, still young. we can't get a kitten... but when we're down to one cat, well, richard doesn't know it yet and he'll balk, but we're getting a kitten then!
