I have a cat that "buries" her food, also. I don't think this is at all like feces covering, but more an, "I'll be back for this later, let me hide it 'til then." Many predators, especially feline types, stash or bury their kill if they can't eat it all at once. Of course, if your cat really hated the new food, it could have been a statement to that effect!
I think it's both. Sometimes it's "let's save this for later," but sometimes it's "the new food tastes like poo."
