Think about Iran, most of the people were moving left under a dictator, the Shaw, installed by Europe and the US, and fell into a theocracy, trapping those citizens as the extreme right took all the best jobs, controlled the colleges, used the military, used and controlled the press, put in place spies amongst the poorer and middle classes.
It can happen anywhere.
