On the history of the word " liberal " , what Dan Klein refers to as historically being liberal is now known as being classical liberal [en.m.wikipedia.org] , or libertarian [en.m.wikipedia.org] . Now of days , as he alluded to , when most people refer to liberals , especially in such countries as the United States , they mean social liberals [en.m.wikipedia.org] . The funny thing is that back before the founding of the Libertarian party , libertarianism more commonly referred to such left-libertarian [en.m.wikipedia.org] groups as most notably for example the Libertarian League [en.m.wikipedia.org] . So how's that for confusion ? P.S. I myself would in large part consider myself to be a liberal socialist [en.m.wikipedia.org] . So as you all should be able to see , the term liberal , in a political sense , has a broad varied meaning .
