Does anyone have experience with Serviceberry also known as Saskatoon Berry or June Berry? I came across them looking to replace volunteer Hackberry trees that screen my back yard from the back lot of the neighboring Baptist church. The Hackberry trees grow extremely fast and have grown into electrical wires that run along the back of my home. I thought a small tree or tall shrub might be better for this part of the yard. Serviceberries probably wouldn't be a good choice even though they range within my hardiness zone because they appear to like moist conditions and this part of my yard would not qualify during our summer heat when the clay soil bakes hard. I was still curious if anyone had grown them and what they thought of the fruit.

The soil was not moist but it certainly was not dry and was average consistency. They grew with no maintenance. The birds enjoyed the fruits. I did have some pie or something that someone else made and I can't remember specifics, other than I liked it.

Cool. Sounds like an interesting choice, but I'm afraid they would not like our summer heat here. The drought we had here serveral years ago did in my 2 plum trees, my peach tree, and 2 very young apricot trees. I was watering every night trying to keep them all alive until water rationing took its toll.
It's a common plant around my parts. I suspect it's even a native (unlike myself - I'm an invasive from Texass).

Well, I'm invasive to Texas. I have a sister who lives in Washington. It is a beautiful state.

I have bluberry bushes...they are lovely in 3 seasons, grow thick & dense, about 4' tall, I do nothing but occassionally weed around them, they are Tough! You need a couple of varieties for pollination. And if you want fruit, you will need to net them! I let the birds have them......

I see blueberries for sale every year but I've been afraid to try them. Perhaps I'll do some more research.
@RussRAB Literally I do Nothing for about 20 years now but weed. Tiny flowers in the spring, green healthy leaves (no pests that I have seen) delicious fruit if you keep birds away, and Gorgeous fall color too...plus tiny leaves that do not make a big mess, usually just blow away. Hardy as can be, we have hot humid spells, occasional-5 in the winter too. After the first year I never ever even watered.
