Weeding and thinning some onions and bush beans today... I'm growing Roma, Purple Pod, and Yellow beans... it used to be too cool and rainy most years for good bean crops in my Alaska 4a zone garden. "There are bean years and then there are lean years." as they used to say - but the climate is changing to warmer and dryer summers here in south-central Alaska and I have had very good bean crops for the past few years.
I had a square foot garden years ago and id love to get a tower and teach my grandson but he doesn't eat anything but pizza and fish sticks
Your garden is a thing of beauty! Shading from pm sun?
Nope just folded back the plastic to do weeding
@FrostyJim Ah-hah!
@MsKathleen - it is a plastic covered hoop tunnel like a mini-greenhouse to help hold heat and last later into Autumn...
@FrostyJim yeah, I noticed. I prefer to use medium weight AgFabric, as it breathes better, yet protects from harsh sun AND frost. It also lets in any rain and works to keep the aphids away. I hoop my raised 2’ x 4’ grow boxes, leaving the ends open so pollinators can get in. I also cover my tomatoes for most if their growing season. I started because we can get frost from mid-December thru mid-January, but gave learned that I have healthier plants if I just keep them covered. I shake the plants, so the blossoms pollinate. This past winter, I had a bumper crop…the cherry tomatoes were as thick as grapes.
It’s wonderful that you can grow so much food for yourself. Your beds look beautiful!

Posted by KateOahuI saw some pretty flowers on a walk today. I’d never seen a white Hibiscus before. And I do not know what the pink flowers are.
