I get very little soaking rain at my house here in the Matsu Valley - Alaska. It can drizzle all day and only measure .05" so I have to water my garden. So far total rain for this year at my house, has been only 5.4" ? I live in a rain shadow surrounded by mountains that block most heavy rainstorms.
The summer has been wet where I live in Missouri--the wettest I can remember for a long time. I have not had to water the plants in open beds, but the ones in pots need a drink now and then.
HAH! And I have a bucket in every sink/bath, so I can collect water as it warms up. Then, like a reverse pioneer woman, I haul it outside to water my vegetables/plants, etc.
@pamagain I have a well so it costs me very little to water my plants. When I water the potted plants, I don't use the hose, but I do in the beds. I do envy you watering everything by hand!
@Gwen_Wanderer HAH! I have way too many plants to do all hand watering! Right now, I'm in line for a visit from our water dept. They have a (free) system which will divert "gray" water into landscaping water and I'm excited about that.
@pamagain I would love to have some gray lines, but they are illegal where I live!
@Gwen_Wanderer Apparently, my city is offering a system they say is safe. We'll see how it goes.
Wow! How much snow do you get?
At my house it will average 3-4 ft over winter but we usually don't have a winter thaw so it can remain until it warms in March. Anchorage can get more and snow removal is a problem in the city. High winds are not common where I live so I don't get blizzards like I remember back in the Midwest... Average temperature in December is usually teens to twenties with a January cold snap down to 10-20 below zero for a week or two...
