Barley, rye or bearded wheat? My guess is it has to be barley or bearded wheat as rye releases chemicals that can suppress growth in other plants.

Nice that they seem to be standing just from the support of the grass. If this works, I will dispense with tomato cages
It might be ok on an indeterminate variety but I think it'll outgrow the cover crop which is now dead and losing its stalk strength. After I took the picture, I installed the cages. The cover keeps the wind and driving rain off the transplants. It's job is done?
@farmboy2017 gotcha. I'll put on my list of "things I would like to try, but will die first" list "see what compainion crops make good tomato cages
