I've always wondered why the garden centers sell those flimsy wire tomato cages. I found them way too weak for any type of tomato grown in my garden. They would collapse under the weight of a healthy crop from one plant.
So I built my own out of scrap wood from a sawmill. They gave me offcuts of 2x2 and 1x2 pine. By joining three 5-foot long pieces with a length of heavy wire (copper is best) and putting some cross ladder type cross braces they were very sturdy and could hold the yield of two plants or more.
Here's a couple of photos.
My dad built tomato cages, those bad boys were sturdy!! I have the flimsy wire cages, and we had quite the storm over the weekend. My tomatoes are all knocked about. Sigh.
I guess some of us only grow flimsy tomatoes because they work just fine for mine, those are huge plants you have there.
Heavy duty and the new age types will insist that you get a better crop yield because of the pyramid shape. It couldn't hurt.
You are hard pressed to get better strength than those pyramids. I wouldnt be surprised if a 6 or 8 foot 2x2 couldnt be put between the tops of two pyramids and then strong twine or thin rope hung down and the growing plants - 3 or 4 trained up.

Posted by KateOahuI saw some pretty flowers on a walk today. I’d never seen a white Hibiscus before. And I do not know what the pink flowers are.
