Wanted to share a little more of the spring color as it unfolds up here in the TN mountains....
The first bearded Iris opened up this morning.....pink, white and red azaleas - the orange pansies are the showiest of all the pansies I set out and the last one shows the coreopsis and the phlox blooming together. People come up here for the fall color in October - but I love this property the way it looks in the spring much more than the fall.
So beautiful, and you are lucky to be living in it.
Really lovely. Mountains but not alpine. I am assuming woodlands? I have never grown azaleas, though they do great here. Still considering. My back yard would be perfect, shady all summer and dappled sunlight in winter.
We are in what's referred to as the plateau....it has its own weird little micro-climate. Having lived in VA and SC and also LA and MS, I've come to realize that there are sooooo many different factors that determine what will grow and thrive.....and what won't. Up here, the azaleas struggle - but the rhododendrons do just fine. The roses don't get enough sun because of the dense canopy - but the trade off is - the hostas grow like wildfire. Was used to acid soil - lots of pine trees so of course, lots of pine needles for mulch....none of that up here. All hardwoods. I'm figuring it out.... One thing I miss is the Indian Hawthorne - I imagine they grow really well where you are - if you decide azaleas are too finicky.
@Lavergne there are always trade offs, I guess. I grew up in the Puget Sound region. That is western Washington State, and a very English climate, cool, damp, but mild temps. Rhodadendrons were everywhere there, too, but can't survive here in the subtropics. I miss apple trees, pear trees, and cherry trees, but now I can consider citrus and bananas and figs. Cool nights of mountain country should give you some interesting options.
