You should inspect any plant you buy. Including unpotting it to look at the roots.

Luckily we don't have any big box stores where I live. However, I do know that some stores (home Depot) sell potted plants that have no roots. A friend bought some 2 dozen Arborvitae plants and every single one died. Someone had simply cut the plant and stuck it in a pot of soil.

@Shouldbefishing I don't know but would you think of ACE hardware as a big box store? There is one near the main ferry terminal and one on the main island, San Juan. I often go there.

@Shouldbefishing I totally agree, but Ace seems to be very customer oriented. If there is a problem they need to fix it and, especially being on an island, the store needs to be pro-active.

I donot buy living things at box stores. I have wonderful nurseries all around me.
