Cherokee's are a favorite of mine too. We're trying Rutgers these year as well.

Fast growing and indeterminate, tomatoes are a crapshoot here, it can turn cold and rainy any time. Even the most mediocre varieties taste great vine ripened.

I planted four different kinds of tomatoes: Early Gir ( for slicing and making tomato sandwiches) l, Amish Pride ( an oval sauce tomato) and two other ones I cannot remember., one of which is a grape tomato. I am not too bothered that I cannot remember . Que sera, sera.

One year, in the past, I started all my tomatoes from seed on the back porch. I had a particularly lively flat of seedlings, set them all out. They loved the place in the garden and grew into 12 cherry tomato plants which then continued to produce cherry tomatoes by the bushel.
I had a bench set out by the road with a sign: Cherry Tomatoes - Free. Please help yourself. The kids on their bicycles all took some and then threw the rest onto my lawn.
The next year, there were vigorous cherry tomato plants growing everywhere. That's the only time I actually mowed live plants. Just could not face cherry tomatoes anymore!

I like the little black tomatoes who know what they are called. I eat them like candy off the vine

There is a "Black Cherry" tomato, I tried it a couple years ago. Had good fruit, nice flavor and they were a little sweet as I recall.

Our favorite tomato are the heritage brandywines. This year we also have some Arkansas Travelers, and Willamettes (Oregon variety).

This year I decided to plant a bunch of tomato seedling that I grew from left over dehydrated tomatoes that I grew over the past couple of years, I'm curious to see what I have when they start fruiting. I'm guessing the heritage varieties will do the best, cherry toms, variegated Romas, Beefsteak and Bonnie Best plus some plum tomatoes.

Over the years, I have grown many varieties, including the Cherokee Purple.. After receiving a gift of black heirloom tomato seeds from my daughter, I was so impressed with the taste (sweet and tangy), texture and juiciness, That they are the only tomatoes I grow any more. They are head and shoulders above any other variety I have ever tried. I save seeds from each year's harvest and use them to grow my own plants.

Incidentally, I have seeds to share if you would like some. Just send me your name and mailing address and I will send you a few seeds.

Do you recall the variety of the heirloom black tomato? I've grown 2-3 varieties of dark cherry tomatoes, including Indigo Rose and Chocolate Sprinkles but the only slicer I've tried is Cherokee Purple.

@DotLewis I'm not sure.com/ The package simply said black herloom. They are not the krim vaireity. They are good slicers.

i appreciate the offer but won't be doing a garden this year. thanks much though!

We do a few heritage types for slicing...
But we concentrate on sauce varieties.
